Ended up shelling out 980 €, which stung a bit, but hey, I'd rather that than sweltering in the car, right? Since getting it fixed though, no troubles at all with the A/C, it's been a piece of cake. And you remember that pesky heat exchanger temperature sensor problem I was dealing with before I went in? They sorted that out too when I saw the mechanic. So while it might hit the pocket hard initially, remember it's more about preserving the longevity of your mean machine, and the comfort of those long drives. Keep cool!
