Seeking Advice on ABS/DSC System Issues and Unresponsive Brake Pedal in '02 Terrano

Spongy/unresponsive brakes

ABS warning light

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Unresponsive brake pedal

ABS/DSC system is not working

Hey guys, I'm stressing out a bit about some issues with my '02 Terrano. The ABS/DSC system's been acting up, the ABS warning light is on, and the brake pedal feels weirdly unresponsive and spongy. Heck, there's even a warning light in the speedometer! I'm no expert, but my hunch is that it could be a signal error from the pressure sensor on the brake booster. The car’s clocked about 159,431 KM and runs on gas. Last time I took my ride to a mechanic, let's just say it wasn't the best experience. Has anyone else faced similar symptoms with their car before? What did you do, and was your mechanic able to fix it without a fuss? Any and all experiences or advice would be appreciated. Cheers!

Hey, got you loud and clear! Had an eerily similar situation with my '05 X-Trail around 170,000KM mark. You're spot-on, I don't want to alarm you, but it could well be your brake system. When I faced it, it was due to incorrect bleeding of the brake system. Bit like your car, my pedal felt spongy and unresponsive. Took it to my trusty garage and the bloke told me it was air trapped within the brake lines causing the spongy feel. The job they did pretty much involved re-bleeding the brakes to push out that trapped air. Now, that might sound simple but with those ABS systems, it can get a bit complicated and needs the right tools and know-how, so keep that in mind. So, it looks like it could be a similar problem. As for how serious it was, well, it's your braking system. Anything off in there and it's not something you want to ignore, you get me? Anyway, as I said, once the system was correctly bled, the issue sorted out. No more troubling lights or spongy pedal sensations. By the way, don't stress too much about these things. Cars do have their problems, especially after a certain mileage. Just find a good mechanic. All the best!

Hey there, wow, your situation sounds so similar to mine! It sounds like the re-bleeding fixed everything up for you, right? Just out of curiosity, do you recall how much that whole operation set you back? ...And since the brake system was correctly bled, has anything else cropped up that you've had to deal with? Like maybe a follow-up issue related to the brakes, or something else entirely? Appreciate your help!

Hey, good to see you again! Yep, getting the brake system re-bled absolutely sorted everything out for me! I remember it was quite reasonable too, I only shelled out 90€ to get it fixed. So, nothing to lose sleep over there! While we're on the subject, I also had that signal error from the pressure sensor on the brake booster like you mentioned earlier. I was relieved when it got fixed after seeing the mechanic - didn't need to worry about those annoying warning signals on my dashboard anymore! Since then, nothing else has caught me off-guard. Looks like fixing the brake system by re-bleeding and repairing that signal error nailed the problems. So don't fret too much. You're in good company and your Terrano should be in good shape soon too. Just find a mechanic you trust and you'll be on the road again in no time! Cheers!

Cheers for the reassurance! Hearing you had a similar issue and got it sorted without any added drama gives me hope. And knowing the cost brought some relief too. The last thing I need right now is a hefty repair bill, you feel me? Alright, I'll make sure to look for a mechanic experienced with brake system re-bleeding. I'm now hopeful that this will resolve the darn ABS/DSC warnings and help my brake pedal back to its responsive ways. Fingers crossed, no more problems pop up! Wish me luck!
