Seeking Advice on ABS Warning Light and Potential Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor in 2002 Volvo V50

ABS/DSC system is not working

ABS warning light

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Fault stored

Hey everyone, I've got an odd issue with my 2002 Volvo V50 Gasoline. The ABS warning light is on, ABS/DSC system ain't working properly, there's a scary light on the speedometer, and a fault is stored. Got a notion it might be something with the Wheel speed sensor (ABS sensor) playing tricks, but not entirely sure. Any of you guys ever run into something like this and took it to the workshop? Would really appreciate your insights, tips, and how you managed to get this issue fixed. Fire away!

Hey, saw your message and I'm reminded of my own car issues. My 2000 Volvo S40 had a similar issue a while back. I'm no car expert, but I do have some knowledge from dealing with this. Took it to my local workshop, we diagnosed it as an ABS sensor failure. The guys there were super helpful, gave me a hand replacing the defective part, was around €260. Bit pricey, but the peace of mind was worth it. Question though, you got traction control on your V50? Wheels fitted with the right specs & in good order? Might help me give you a few more ideas. Let me know, hope to hear back from ya' soon.

Hey, thanks for the prompt response! Really appreciate your input. Just checked, and yes, my V50 does have traction control and the wheels seem to be in order and as per spec, as far as I can tell. I got her last serviced at 175468 km and no major complaints apart from this. Perhaps, a trip down to the local workshop is due sooner than later, don't want to risk any further damage or something. By the way, that price for the ABS sensor seems a bit steep but if that'll get rid of the problem, it might just be cost effective in the long run. Do you reckon I might have to replace the ABS module as well? Let me know your thoughts!

Hey again! I'm glad that you found my previous advice helpful. About the ABS module, it's a bit tricky. In my case, it was just the ABS sensor that was off and after replacing that, everything was back to normal. But every car is a unique beast, isn't it? For the ABS module, honestly, it depends if it shows any sign of malfunction when you run the diagnostics, but a faulty wheel speed sensor doesn't necessarily mean a faulty module altogether. I got lucky mine didn't need it - the ABS module replacement could cost you in the neighborhood of €500-€700! So you definitely want to make sure before you go down that road. One thing though, check the wiring to your ABS sensor as well. Sometimes, it's just a question of a loose or faulty connection and that could be causing your problems. Good luck with it, let me know how it goes and if you need any more advice. We Volvo owners gotta stick together!

Wow! That is some handy info you've given me there. The ABS module does sound pricey, crossing fingers it's just the ABS sensor needing a replacement or maybe just some wiring issues. I'll take your advice on checking those as well before making a trip to the workshop. Really appreciate your help with this, it's made the task seem less daunting! Yeah, you're right, us Volvo folks have to help each other out! Will let you know how it turns out once I've got her checked and hopefully fixed. Thanks a ton again! Cheers!
