Seeking Advice on 2019 Kia Soul Gasoline Engine Issues: Black Smoke, Power Loss, and Frequent Stalling

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Strong exhaust smell

Unsteady engine

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Engine shuts off by itself

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Hey, my 2019 Kia Soul with a Gasoline engine is acting up in a way I've never seen before. It's belching black smoke on acceleration, the check engine light's on, and it's sometimes shutting off on its own. Also, I've noticed a power loss accompanied by a shaky engine, jerking when I hit the gas, a drop in fuel efficiency, a strong exhaust odor, and it's stalling at idle. I'm suspecting issues with the fuel composition but I'm not too sure. Anyone had a similar problem? What did your mechanic do to fix this? Appreciate your thoughts and experiences here. Thanks!

Hey there! I had a quite similar problem with my 2017 Kia Optima (Petrol engine) a while back. I wouldn't say I'm a car whiz, but I've some experience fixing minor issues. However, in the mentioned case, I headed straight down to my neighborhood workshop. After a closer look, they found my cables/plugs to be defective. I coughed up about 95 Euro to get them replaced and voila, problem solved! I reckon it's worth doing similar checks on your ride. However, it'd be more helpful if you could share the OBDII codes and maybe more info on the car's maintenance history. This would help us nail down if your issue could be something similar or something different. Good luck!

Hey there! Thanks for the speedy response! I really appreciate it. Honestly, I hadn't thought the problem could boil down to the cables or plugs. I'll definitely get them checked out asap. For the OBDII codes, you see, I don't recall them now. But, in regards to the car maintenance history, I've consistently serviced my Kia every 8k km or so. My last service was just after crossing the 128860 km mark. I'll also make sure to ask my mechanic for OBDII codes when I bring my car again for inspection, that should help for a more precise diagnosis. Thanks again!

No problem at all! Glad I could help. A regular maintenance history is a good sign, it means you've been keeping your car in check. But given these issues cropping up, it really might be time to look at those cables and plugs. Also, if you've been servicing your car regularly and this is happening, it might be worth it to consider your fuel sources. You mentioned fuel composition errors earlier. If you've recently switched petrol stations or maybe if a certain station has bad quality fuel, it could be impacting your engine performance. And yep, getting those OBDII codes is a wise move. They are crucial in helping to pinpoint what's going wrong under the hood. Just remember to let your mechanic know about each and every symptom, even the ones you think are minor. Every little bit of info helps! Hope your ride gets back to smooth sailing soon!

That's some sound advice! I never really thought about the fuel source being one of the possible culprits. Come to think of it, I did recently switch petrol stations. Might have to reconsider my choice, then. Definitely going to note down every symptom you've mentioned and get those OBDII codes from my mechanic. Hoping with all this info, we'll be able to figure out what's up with my ride. Stay tuned for updates! Thanks again for your help. Really appreciate it!
