Seeking Advice on 2019 Fiat 500 Gasoline Engine Issues: Black Smoke, Drop in Power, and Possible Air Mass Sensor Problems

Loss of engine power

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Shaking while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Engine shuts off by itself

Unsteady engine

Hey guys, I've got a 2019 Fiat 500 with a Gasoline engine acting very weird lately. It's giving black smoke when I accelerate, the check engine light is on, and it even shuts off on its own. Besides, I'm noticing drop in power, unsteady and shaky idling, and it jerks and stalls while idling, too. Fuel economy has also taken a hit. I have a hunch that there might be an issue with the air mass sensor. Has anyone had a similar experience or faced these sorts of issues? I'd appreciate any tips or advice on troubleshooting this, especially if you've got it fixed up at the workshop. Cheers!

Hey, sounds like a bit of a pickle you've got there. I had a similar issue with my 2017 Fiat Punto, so not exactly the same model, but close enough. I'm by no means an expert, but I think I have some experience that might help you out. Turned out for me, the problem was Damage to the cable harness. I took it to my local friendly mechanic, and they sorted it all out for me. Ended up costing me 95€, but it was totally worth it! Just to be sure, could you let us know anything about any modifications or recent work you've done on your Fiat? It would make it easier to suggest more detailed steps. Best of luck!

Hey, cheers for the response! I haven't really done any modifications lately, just regular maintenance stuff. Heater core was replaced during the last service, don't know if that's gonna make a difference. But yeah, I'll definitely get my mechanic to check out the cable harness. He did mention something about potential problems with the sensors or wiring due to the mileage. It's standing at 76988 km by the way. I just hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Thanks again for your tip!

No worries! Since you mentioned you haven't done any modifications and it's only been routine maintenance, it's not likely that the heater core replacement has anything to do with this. With your car's mileage, sensor or wiring issues could come up, so it's a good call to get it checked. Just be prepared though, sometimes these fixes can bite the wallet, but trust me it's worth it to have a smooth-running ride. Knowing it's the air mass sensor or the cable harness should narrow down the troubleshooting for your mechanic, hopefully making it less of a hit on your pocket. Remember, a stall-free drive is a worry-free drive. Best of luck with it and keep us posted! Cheers!

Thank you for the reassurance! I hope the fix won't be too bad on the wallet. I have an appointment with my mechanic lined up for the end of this week and I will make sure to mention the possible sensor and wiring issues. Can't wait for a smoother drive and to say goodbye to that obnoxious check engine light, haha! I'll definitely keep you guys in the loop. Cheers for everything!
