Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey car buddies, I need some advice. I've got a 2018 Kia Mohave, gasoline engine, that's been acting up lately. The thing is spewing black smoke when I accelerate and the check engine light's always on. It's even been shutting itself off, losing power, and the engine ain't steady. Plus, it's jerky on acceleration, gulping down fuel like mad, smells pretty strong from the exhaust, and stalls while idling. I'm guessing it might have something to do with a low pressure fuel system fault, but not completely sure. Anyone encountered the same issue? If so, how did your garage fix this up and what was your overall experience? Really appreciate any tips or guidance here.

Hey! I reckon I can help out. I had a similar bout with my 2016 Kia Sorento a while back. I'm definitely not a car guru, but not entirely clueless either; I'd like to think I've got some experience under my hood. Same symptoms as you, including the whole black smoke and odd smells deal. The lads at my local workshop ended up diagnosing it as incorrect software values for the fuel pump. Had to pay around 45 Euro to get it sorted. After the fix, the car ran smooth as silk! Just a quick thought, have you checked if your Mohave is running on the latest software? I imagine problems like these occur due to software-hardware mismatch. Would be great if you could jot down the software version and share it here. It might provide a clearer picture of what might be going on with your Mohave. Safe driving!

Wow, that's really insightful! I haven't thought about software issues yet. I was more leaning towards a mechanical issue, but the software mismatch does make sense. Will definitely take that into account. I'll check the software version as soon as I get a chance and drop the info here. For reference, my Kia has clocked 73188 KM and it's last serviced about 4 months back. Not sure if that plays a part in this equation but yeah, just putting it out there. Cheers for the help, dude! I'm getting a bit more hope that this problem can be fixed. Will keep you guys posted! Safe travels!

No worries! That's what we're here for. With your mileage—just over 73K KM—it does seem possible that it could be a software issue related to the fuel pump control module. Mine got fixed at around the same mileage! And oh, four months since the last service? Seems right about time where minor issues start emerging. Just don't ignore them, ya know? Small problems have a nasty habit of becoming bigones if not tackled on time. Eagerly waiting for your software version. We'll get this figured out! Meanwhile, you might want to step by your favorite garage and run a thorough diagnostic; just to be safe. That black smoke ain’t normal! Remember, better safe than sorry. Happy motoring!

Appreciate the reassurance and advice! Definitely going to schedule a service soon, and I'll be sure to mention the potential software issue. Never knew these small gadgets could be so critical for the car's performance. I've just learnt something today for sure! Hopefully, this tricky situation will be sorted out soon. I'll drop the software info and any update from the garage as soon as I get it. Until then, drive safe and enjoy the ride, guys! Cheers!
