Seeking Advice on 2017 Volvo XC90 Diesel with Smoke, Loss of Power, and Engine Issues: Possible Air Mass Sensor Problem?

Hey folks! I've got a 2017 Volvo XC90 Diesel that's acting up a bit. Black smoke on acceleration, check engine warning and the engine shutting off sparodically. Not to mention power loss, unsteady engine, jerking forward, eating up fuel like crazy, stalling and shaking at idle. I have a feeling it could be the air mass sensor playing up, not too sure though. Anyone else had these issues and got them sorted out in their workshop? What was your experience like? Any tips or insights would be awesome. Cheers!

Hey there! I've got a similar whip; a 2015 Volvo XC70 Diesel, slightly older to your model, and I faced a somewhat related issue. I'd say I have some experience dealing with car problems since I like to get my hands dirty sometimes. My beast was also throwing up black smoke and guzzling fuel like there's no tomorrow. Classic signs of an MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor defect, so your hunch could be right. It cost me about 415 Euro at my local workshop to get it sorted, was worth it though. But hey, it could also be something entirely different messing with your car. Can you elaborate on your maintenance history? Any error codes popping up when you run a diagnostic? That could help in pinpointing the problem. Cheers!

Hey! Thanks for the suggestions. Glad to hear I'm not the only one. My last service was done at 135409 KM, no big issues reported then that could cause this mess. I ran a diagnostic but no error codes came up, freaky right? At this point, anything could be leading to these issues. I'll most likely take her to my local mechanic, they usually know her inside out. Let's see how that goes. Any other insights you or anyone else could have before I do that, I'm all ears, folks! Cheers.

Hey again! It certainly feels like a bit of a mystery without any error codes. Based on my experience though, it might not just be the Mass Air Flow sensor. The symptoms you're describing could potentially be due to problems with the fuel injectors or even the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve. Fuel injectors, if clogged or leaking, can cause an imbalance in the air-fuel ratio leading to bad fuel economy, engine shutting off, stalling, all that jazz. The EGR valve, on the other hand, if stuck open or clogged, can cause a lot of these symptoms as it impacts the combustion process. Your local mechanic should be able to check these. But before you head that way, might be worth giving the MAF sensor a good clean using a proper cleaning spray for this very purpose. It's a cheap and quick attempt before a potentially pricey workshop visit. Fingers crossed it's just something simple! Good luck with whatever is causing your Volvo to throw a tantrum. Keep us updated, yeah? Cheers!

Hey again! You've been a real help! I never really considered the fuel injectors or the EGR valve. It's a bit more complex than I thought. I'll surely give the MAF sensor a good clean before anything else. If that doesn't hit the mark, off to the local mechanic it is and have them check everything. I appreciate all the suggestions, folks! Hopefully, it's nothing too serious. Fingers crossed and easy on the wallet. Will keep you updated on the progress. Thanks a ton and cheers!
