Seeking Advice on 2017 Nissan Pathfinder Issues: Unusual Symptoms and Suspected Air Mass Sensor Damage

Engine shuts off by itself

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Shaking while idling

Stalling while idling

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Hey everyone, I'm having a bit of a puzzling issue with my 2017 Nissan Pathfinder Gasoline. Lately, it's been showing symptoms like black smoke when accelerating, check engine light staying on, engine turning off on its own, plus a decrease in power. I've also noticed it jerks during acceleration, guzzles more gas than usual, stalls at idle, and shakes while idling too. I suspect there might be some damage to the air mass sensor. Has anyone had a similar experience? How did your workshop handle it and what was the outcome? I appreciate all tips and experiences!

Hey there, seems like you're having a bit of a pickle. So, I've got some experience with cars, wouldn't say I'm an expert, but I know my way around. I actually had a very similar situation with my 2015 Nissan Rogue. It's not the same model as yours, but close enough. In my case, it turned out, just as you suspect, the problem was a mass air flow sensor defect. Took mine to my trusted local guy, and he had to replace the part. The total damage to my wallet was around 415 Euro. I believe your Pathfinder might be having the same MAF sensor problem. But first things first, can you tell me a bit more about your vehicle? Mileage, when was the last service, any recent repairs? This could help identify if there's a bigger issue at hand. Cheers!

Hey! Thanks for your input. That's exactly what I had in mind - a faulty MAF sensor. My Pathfinder's odometer currently reads 124153 KM. As for the service, I regularly service it and the most recent one was just a handful of months ago. No major repairs yet, thankfully. Seems like I might need to drop by my mechanic's place for a quick check-up. I hope it won't break the bank. Cheers for your help!

Hey! Not a problem at all! I'm glad to assist. Honestly, your ritual of regular servicing is top-notch. It's half the battle won against any huge repair costs. Given the symptoms and the fact that your Pathfinder has already clocked over 124k KM, a malfunctioning MAF sensor could very well be the root cause. As I mentioned earlier, the cost of replacing the sensor wasn't too steep for my Rogue. Even factoring in the difference between our vehicle models, I believe it won't be too much heavier on your wallet either. Remember, the sooner you get it checked out, the better. A malfunctioning MAF could cause long-term damage to other parts as well, which could, in turn, cost you more. So, don't procrastinate on this one! Post back here with what your mechanic says. I'm curious to know whether my guess hits the mark. Take care and drive safe!
