Seeking Advice on 2016 Nissan Rogue Exhaust Aftertreatment Issues

Exhaust leak

Strong exhaust smell

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey fellow car lovers, I need some advice. I've got a 2016 Nissan Rogue with a Gasoline engine and lately, it's been acting up. The symptoms include black smoke upon acceleration, a lit-up check engine light, reduced engine power, an apparent exhaust leak, and a pretty strong exhaust smell. I have a hunch this could be due to an issue with the exhaust aftertreatment system. Has anyone dealt with a similar problem before? If so, could you share how your workshop resolved it and what your experience was like? Any tips to identify the exact issue would be greatly appreciated too!

Hey there! So, I don't have heaps of car knowledge, but I did have a similar problem with my 2018 Nissan Qashqai a while back. Just like your Rogue, I was smelling foul exhaust and losing engine power. It turned out one of my lambda sensors (oxygen sensors) had gone kaput. They're crucial in controlling exhaust emissions, so it matches up with your issue. Down at my local workshop, they diagnosed the problem and fixed it for 375 Euro. Was a bit surprised by the cost, but hey, the car's been running like a dream ever since! By the way, do you know if your Rogue has a turbocharged engine? They can sometimes contribute to these kinds of problems, so it's worth considering if you haven't already. Hope this helps!

Hey! Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely look into the lambda sensor possibility. As for the turbocharged engine question, nope, my Rogue doesn't have it. I just clocked around 120503 km on it until its last service, so it's due for another one soon. Hopefully they can pinpoint the issue then. I guess €375 isn't too bad if it solves the issue. Cheers for the advice, really appreciate it!

You're welcome, bud! Given your mileage, it's a good idea to have a thorough check of all possible causes next service. I mean, yeah, not having a turbo rules out a few things, but it could still be a number of factors related to fuel or exhaust systems. My Qashqai had clocked similar miles when I had the lambda sensor issue. So, keep an eye on your usual fuel consumption as well, fluctuation there could be another sign of something gone awry with the exhaust aftertreatment or fuel delivery systems. Anyway, fingers crossed it won't be something more serious than a faulty sensor, and you'll be back on the road with your Rogue running smooth as ever! About €375, hey, I grumbled about cost at first too (don't we all?), but when you tally being off-road versus hassle free driving, it's totally worth it! Best of luck with the service! Keep us posted on the diagnosis, will ya?

Cheers! That's sound advice, I'll keep tabs on my fuel consumption too. Got my fingers crossed hard, really hope it's just a sensor thing. I do get your point about cost vs convenience, guess I need to remember that while grumbling about the cost as well, haha! I'll definitely keep you all in the loop. Get ready for an update after my next service. Thanks again!
