Metal shavings in oil

Hey! I've been having some odd trouble with my 2016 Mazda MPV, Gasoline engine. The check engine light's on, it's losing power, the engine isn't steady, and it even jerks during acceleration. It's guzzling way more fuel than usual, making weird noises and even some valve adjustment noise. On top of it all, there are metal shavings in the oil - pretty bizarre, right? My guess is that the camshaft adjustment is at fault but I'd love some second opinions to confirm, or any other theories. Has anybody faced something similar and, if so, what was your experience getting it fixed at the workshop? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there, I'm probably a bit more car-savvy than the average Joe but I wouldn't say I'm some sort of motor whizkid, so take my words with a grain of salt! I dealt with a somewhat similar issue on my 2014 Mazda6; whole lotta mess, let me tell you. Turned out my car faced a defective Valve servomotor – quite the pesky bugger. I ended up taking it to my local workshop and it cost me about 405€ to set things right. The problems you described were almost identical – engine jerking, fuel-guzzling, metal shavings, the works. Before I chip in with any further thoughts though, is this the first time you're encountering these issues or is this a recurring problem? Have you recently made any changes or repairs to the vehicle? Also, it would help to know the mileage on your MPV. Looking forward to your reply so we can dive a bit more into this!

Hey there, thanks for chiming in! Really appreciate your input. With regard to your question, it's my first time dealing with these issues and there have been no recent changes or repairs done to the car. I've run my Mazda MPV for around 115615 KM now. Not sure if that's useful, but thought I'd mention it. I'm planning to take my car to a reputable workshop nearby to get everything checked. Hoping the bill won't deflate my wallet too much! If you can think of any other possible causes or solutions, do let me know. It's a stressful situation but your advice gives me a good starting point. Looking forward to hearing back from you soon!

Hey! Glad you found my initial info useful. With over 115k on the clock, it's not unusual for your Mazda MPV to start showing signs of wear and tear. It's pretty routine, so don't stress about it too much! In your case, I'd also check on the Camshaft Position Sensor. A fault there might cause all the symptoms you mentioned. In my experience, the part was not expensive but the labor was a bit hefty. Then again, it's better to spend a few bucks now than have to deal with bigger issues down the line! Another thing you might want to check on is the exhaust system. An issue with the catalytic converter, for instance, could cause reduced engine power and increased fuel consumption. Bringing your car to a professional is definitely the best route though. I'd recommend that you specifically ask them to check on the Valve servomotor, Camshaft Position Sensor, and the exhaust system, as I mentioned. You can never be too sure. I hope this helps you out a bit more and, of course, keep that chin up! Cars, amirite? Let me know how it goes at the workshop. All the best!

Cheers! You've been a load of help. It feels a bit daunting, but it's relieving to have some ideas on what might be the cause. I've jotted down everything and I'll be sure to mention these points to the professionals. You were right about the mileage–I suppose it's about that time, huh? You've definitely eased my mind about the whole situation. In the end, cars are just another one of life's little puzzles. I'll keep you posted about what the workshop says. Thanks a ton for your advice! You take care too.
