Seeking Advice on 2016 Fiat Strada's Transmission Slipping and Grinding Noise Problems

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Whining or grinding noises

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hey fellow motorheads, I'm having a bit of a pickle with my 2016 Fiat Strada Gasoline engine. Lately, the transmission's been slipping, shifting's all over the place, and there's this gnarly grinding noise when I shift gears. There's also this persistent whining sound I can't shake off. My initial bet is on a faulty transmission oil pressure cooler but not 100% sure. Anyone had a similar issue & can share how their repair shop nailed the problem? Any tips to pinpoint the issue would be massively appreciated!

Hey there! Sounds pretty familiar. Had a strikingly similar issue with my 2014 Fiat Toro Diesel not too long ago. The symptoms were almost identical. I'd slot myself in the "some experience" league when it comes to car repairs. Took my Toro to my local mechanic as soon as the noises kicked in. After a bit of poking around, they found the valve cable connection was defective and replaced it. Not the cheapest fix - cost me €170, but the car's been smooth as silk since. Is your Strada automatic or manual? And what's the mileage on it? One more thing, have you noticed any leaks or changes in your transmission fluid? These bits could help nail down your problem more precisely. Hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for chiming in! Really appreciate it. To answer your queries - my Strada's an automatic, and the odometer's reading 78760 km. No recent service, aside from routine checks. Didn't spot any fluid changes or leaks that stick out, just the same old transmission nonsense. The valve cable connection bit seems interesting, I'll surely check that out. Classical cars, always ready to surprise you, eh? Cheers for the insight!

No worries! I'm always happy to share my two cents. Given your Strada's automatic and the mileage on it, your transmission could be wearing out. Transmissions are swamped after long, eco-unfriendly drives. But don't prematurely conclude anything! It could very well be a valve cable connection issue too as discussed earlier. One advice though, get your transmission fluid checked. Even though you didn't spot any leaks, an over-worn fluid or low level could be a potential culprit, causing these erratic shifts and grinding noise. To peek underneath your car, you might need a professional hand, but you might strike gold. One more thing, I had also faced whining noise once and it was a tiny little issue with my Torque Converter. However, my mechanic explained it could be due to an issue with the pump too. Just trying to broaden the horizon of possible issues for you. I'll recommend getting a thorough diagnostic run, it sure stings the pocket a bit but better to be safe than sorry. Who knows, you might just save your transmission life! Keep us posted on how things turn out. Good luck!

Spot on! I'll definitely delve into the possibility of the transmission being worn out, plus the whole valve cable connection and torque converter shebang. The more I dig into this, the more a thorough diagnostic run sounds like a wise decision. I'll pop into my local mechanic this weekend and have them take a look-see. And yes, I'll check that transmission fluid as well. Let's hope it’s something minor and not a major overhaul. Will surely keep you guys posted on how it pans out. Really appreciate the advice. Thank you!
