Seeking Advice on 2010 Lexus LFA Oil Light Warning and Metal Shavings in Oil - Possible Engine Oil Pressure Switch Issue

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Metal shavings in oil

Oil light on

Hey! I'm struggling with my 2010 Lexus LFA. Lately, the oil light popped on, I'm finding metal shavings in the oil, and there's a warning light on the speedometer. I'm suspecting a problem possibly related to the engine oil pressure switch but not totally sure. Anyone experienced this issue before or have any tips on troubleshooting the exact problem? What did your workshop do to fix the issue? Looking for some of your experiences and insights. Thanks!

Hey! I had a similar issue with my 2008 Lexus IS F - close to your model, just 2 years older. I'm not a car expert by any means, just a guy who knows his way around a little. I took my beast to a local garage, where they diagnosed that incorrect engine oil was being used. Caused some damage and filled up my nerves with too much of a Sunday thrill! Ended up having to pay 175 Euro to get it fixed. Do you happen to know what type of engine oil you've been using? It could help shed some light on your situation. The devil is in the details after all! Looking forward to your reply!

Hey! Thanks for the tip. I've been using 5W-30 oil for my LFA. It got serviced at 80000 KM marker. So, maybe you're onto something with the oil theory. I guess I'll have to take it to the garage to get it checked out. Fingers crossed it is just a wrong oil situation and nothing more serious. Thanks again for your help!

Hey, no problem at all, happy to help. Just to share, for my IS F, the mechanic recommended 5W-40 oil instead of 5W-30. He said, the slightly thicker oil can handle the high-performance engine of Lexus cars better, reducing the risk of metal shavings. Also, the oil light being on is indeed a concern. It might mean low oil pressure, which your initial suspicion of a faulty engine oil pressure switch could explain. But it could also be due to worn-out parts (like piston rings, valve seals, or even oil pump). Those metal filings could be from these parts, indicating some wear and tear. So, yep, definitely a good call to have it checked out by a pro. And it might be worth asking them about using a different grade of oil in future. Keep us updated. Cheers!

Wow! Thanks a ton for that detailed response. I wouldn't have thought about the oil viscosity affecting the engine like that. I'll ask the pros about switching to a 5W-40 grade then, see what they say. As for the worn-out parts, it does seem possible considering how long I've been driving the car. I'll get a thorough check and hope for the best. Really appreciate your help! Will give an update once it's been checked and sorted out. Cheers!
