Seeking Advice on 2010 Fiat Multipla: Check Engine Light, Reduced Power, Unusual Noises, and Suspected Knock Sensor Issue

Weird engine noise

Loss of engine power

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Hey! I've got a bit of a pickle with my 2010 Fiat Multipla running on gasoline. It's not acting like usual. I've noticed the check engine light is on and on top of that, the engine's power seems to have dropped. Also, the car jerks when I'm trying to accelerate. Wouldn't be much of a problem if my fuel economy wasn't also down, and there's a strange noise coming from the engine. I'm suspecting maybe a problem with the knock sensor. Have any of you ever faced similar issues and have some tips that could help me out? Would love to hear your experiences and how you managed to fix it at the garage. Thanks in advance!

Hey! Just reading through your issue rang a bell for me. I had a somewhat similar situation with my 2008 Fiat Doblo. I'm no mechanic, but I like to tinker with cars now and then, so I'd say my car expertise lies somewhere between low and some. One fine day, just like you, my check engine light popped up and I felt the power drop off too. Turned out, it wasn't an issue with the knock sensor as I initially suspected, but rather a cable/plug problem. I managed to get the issue resolved at my local workshop. They replaced the defective cable, and it cost me around 95€. My suggestion - perhaps it's worth looking into that aspect as well, not dismissing the knock sensor concern entirely, of course. But just to be more specific, could you share a bit more info about your Multipla? Like the mileage, regularity of service, and when you last changed engine oil? That might help a bit more to pinpoint the direction to take. Best of luck!

Hey there, Appreciate the response and the tip! To answer your question, my trusty Multipla has been with me for a while now, clocking up a hearty 248758 KM. I've always been pretty regular with the servicing, and the last oil change was around 5000 KM back. Based on your experience, it seems like it might not necessarily be the knock sensor - I’ll definitely pass that on to my mechanic to look into the cable and plug issue you mentioned. Cheers for the help!

Hey! Good to hear back from you! Your Fiat has indeed covered a good distance, respect that you've kept it serviced regularly. Regarding your current issue, considering the mileage, there's a chance that wear and tear might have caused the jerking and weird engine noise. The high mileage cars sometimes do act up! Also from your description, it's encouraging that you had your engine oil replaced recently, so at least that can be ruled out as a cause. I genuinely think the knock sensor could be a part of the problem, but like I initially mentioned, other issues like faulty spark plugs, wiring, or even problems with the fuel injectors could result in similar symptoms. Ask your mechanic to do a thorough check. Sometimes a comprehensive scan can pinpoint minor issues which we might overlook. And do keep us updated with the developments. We're all in this together! Cheers for now!

Hey, cheers for that! Absolutely, I get what you mean. My Fiat's definitely seen better days, got a lot of miles on the clock. I'll definitely bring up the possibility of wear and tear, faulty spark plugs or wiring, or even problems with the fuel injectors to my mechanic. You've been such a great help. I'll get her checked out fully and will keep y'all updated on how things go. Stay cool, and really, thanks again!
