Seeking Advice on 2008 Lexus RX Hybrid Transmission Issues and Potential Faulty Oil Temp Sensor

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of a pickle with my 2008 Lexus RX Hybrid. The transmission has been acting fishy with erratic shifts and a grinding sound when swapping gears. To top it off, there's this nagging warning light on the speedometer. I'm thinking it might be a dodgy transmission oil temp sensor. Has anyone else had this problem and found a way to sort it out at their local garage? Would appreciate any tips or personal experiences. Cheers!

Hey there, Yep, I've got a 2006 Lexus ES, got pretty much the same issue last year. I'd say my car knowledge is kinda "some experience" level, not a guru, but I knew enough to realize I needed professional help. Hauled the old girl into my local workshop. Found out the problem was the Transmission oil level was too low. I coughed up about 365 Euro, had them fix it right up. Now she runs like a dream. They refilled the transmission fluid and reminded me to check it regularly. Your RX Hybrid might have a similar issue. Any idea of your current transmission fluid level or the last time it was changed? Let's dig deeper, share some more details about your vehicle's mileage, transmission fluid changes, etc. maybe I can help guide you a little more.

Hey, thanks for chiming in! My RX has clocked 70730 KM so far. Now that you mention it, I can't really recall when the transmission fluid was last changed. I take it to the service regularly but frankly, I don't pay much attention to the specifics. I’ll go ahead with your suggestion and get the transmission fluid level checked at my mechanic's. Maybe it's as simple as that and I'm just overthinking it. Thanks again you might've saved me a few sleepless nights. Appreciate it!

Hey! No problem at all, glad to help! Your Lexus is a pretty solid vehicle but considering the mileage (70730 KM is decent), it's definitely at a stage where these things can start popping up. I wouldn't sweat it too much though. I'd certainly place my money on the transmission fluid if you can't recall the last time it was changed. Mechanics sometimes overlook these details, especially in regular servicing. It's easy to just gloss over, right? I'll say, let your mechanic know specifically to check the transmission fluid level and condition. Best if they can flush the old one entirely and replace with new fluid. See if that solves your problem. If that still doesn't do the trick, then it's worth looking into other possible causes like the Transmission oil temp sensor or even further. Keep us updated on how it goes, fingers crossed it's a straight forward fix for you!

Brilliant advice! I’ve noted it all down. I'll definitely let my mechanic know about the transmission fluid and get it flushed if needed. It certainly seems more likely now that the problem could be tied to this. It's quite a relief knowing that it might not be the transmission oil temp sensor. That could've burnt a serious hole in my pocket. I'll update you once I get the ol' Lexus checked. Thanks again for your help, really put my mind at ease. Cheers!
