Seeking Advice on 2006 Hyundai Accent's Oil Light Problems and Strange Engine Noises

Oil light on

|

Metal shavings in oil

|

Weird engine noise

|

Valve adjustment noise

Hey everyone, I'm currently stumped with a few issues on my 2006 Hyundai Accent with a gasoline engine. The oil light keeps turning on, I'm hearing some odd noises like the valves need adjusting, plus the engine sounds strange. I also noticed some metal shavings in the oil which concerns me because I think it might be a problem with the oil pressure system. Have any of you dealt with something like this before and if so, how did your mechanic solve it? Would really appreciate any tips or shared experiences to figure this one out. Thanks!

Hey there! Sounds like you're running into a similar issue I had on my 2004 Hyundai Elantra a couple years back. I have some experience fixing up cars, not a ton, but enough to get my hands dirty. Same symptoms – the oil light going bonkers, weird engine noises, and metal bits in the oil (big red flag). Turned out my oil pump was defective. I took my ride to my local workshop, they are pretty good at getting to the root of the issue. The fix was pricey, costing me around €755 but it was necessary to keep the car alive and kicking. Now, could you give me more deets about your car? Mileage, maintenance history, that sort of stuff. It would help me understand better and possibly give you more targeted advice. 'Till then, steer safe!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! Hearing your experience sure gives me a better idea of what might be happening. I've driven the Accent for around 42568 KM up until now. The last time I took it in for service was roughly 5 months ago. Can't really recall any major issues in the past, it's mostly been smooth sailing. Hopefully, it's not gonna cost me an arm and a leg to fix, like with your Elantra. Anyway, guess I'll have to brace myself for it. Cheers!

Hello again fellow Hyundai! Good to hear you've kept it serviced, it does make a difference down the line. Mine had about double your mileage when the trouble started. Sure sounds like you're running into the same problem I did. The mileage is a bit on the lower side for this issue but well, parts can sometimes give out earlier. Your going-in-for-service timeframe seems reasonable, but seeing those metal shavings, those are a telltale sign of something more serious. My advice, get it checked by a professional ASAP. The oil pump is serious business, it lubricates all the moving parts. No lubrication, those parts grind against each other (hence the shavings and the noise). It might not be a cheap fix, but it's certainly cheaper than getting a new engine or a new car. And if it really turns out to be the same issue as mine, it's a fix that gives you peace of mind and you can squeeze some more years and miles out of the ol' Accent. Anyway, good luck with it and let us know how it pans out. Stay safe on those roads!

Thanks for the additional info, it's really helpful! Yeah, I'd rather sort it out than end up needing a whole new car. I'll be taking it to a mechanic first thing in the morning to get that oil pump checked out. And I'll definitely update you guys. Looks like it's going to be an eventful day. Wish me luck and thanks again for your advice, it's really appreciated! Safe driving to you too!
