Seeking Advice on 2005 Volvo S40 Diesel Losing Power, Traction, and Malfunctioning ABS and DSC System

ABS warning light

ABS/DSC system is not working

Loss of traction

Loss of engine power

Hey folks, I've got a bit of a problem with my 2005 Volvo S40 Diesel that I'm hoping someone here might be able to shed some light on. Recently, it's been losing power and traction, and both the ABS warning light and the DSC system have started acting up. I suspect there could be something wrong with the supply voltage for the ABS speed sensor. Has anyone here faced similar issues? If so, how did your workshop go about fixing it? Any tips to narrow down the issue would be highly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance!

Hey, I hear ya! I've got a 2003 Volvo S60 that had a very similar issue last year. First things first, I'm no mechanic level expert but I've got some experience under my belt just from dealing with my own car issues over the years. What happened to me was a faulty component, specifically an integrated sensor in the ABS system. It took some time messing around with my workshop guys to figure it out, but once they identified the sensor was the problem, they replaced it and the issue was sorted. I ended up paying about 170 Euro to get it all fixed. Given that your car's symptoms sound pretty similar to what I went through, it might be the same issue. But, to be sure, could you possibly check some specifics on your S40? I'm talking about the business end of your car: brake lines, ABS system connections, stuff like that. Any extra info could help folks like us to give you better advice! Remember, take my advice with a pinch of salt. I ain't no certified mechanic, just a Volvo owner who dealt with a similar issue. Good luck!

Thanks for the swift response! I appreciate your insight! My Volvo S40's been on the road for quite a long now, hit 140,536 KM on the last check. Got it serviced recently too but didn't help much. I did take a look at the brake lines and ABS system connections as you suggested. Everything seems alright there, no visible issues, at least. I reckon the problem might be more internal, like you had with your Volvo S60. Guess the only way forward is to get it checked by a professional, fingers crossed it's just a simple sensor replacement, like in your case! Oh well, thanks again for your advice! Let's see what happens next. Will update as I get some diagnosis done. Cheers!

Hey there! Good to see you took out the time to check the lines and connections. Understood you didn't spot anything wrong there visibly; these issues can indeed be a bit elusive. Given the symptoms you've explained, your S40 crossing the 140k mark, and similar issues in my S60, I'm still leaning towards it being a sensor issue. But like you said, only a thorough check by a pro can confirm that. Don't lose heart! These older Volvos are troops, had their fair share of quirks but are generally solid! It's great that you're keeping us in the loop. This forum is all about helping each other out, so every piece of info helps. Post an update when you can, and let's hope it's nothing too serious, eh? Good luck with it, and fingers crossed it'll all be fine disturbing just your pocket slightly! Cheers!

I appreciate the vote of confidence! Aye, these Volvos are indeed a solid bunch, just keep on ticking with the right care. You've been a real help through this mess - knowing someone else has dealt with something similar does relieve some of the stress, if I'm honest! And you’re absolutely right! This forum works because we all pitch in with the little knowledge we have, maybe I can help someone down the line with whatever happens with my S40. I will definitely keep you guys updated once the experts have taken a look. Let's hope it doesn't break my bank, haha! Take care and cheers!
