Seeking Advice on 2004 Lexus SC Overheating Issue and Check Engine Light

Hey! I've got a 2004 Lexus SC, gasoline-powered with about 145,976 KM on the clock. Recently, it started overheating a bit and the pesky check engine light came on. Nothing dramatic yet, but I'm thinking it could be due to a potential thermostat issue? Bit wary about heading straight to the mechanic, got burnt last time. Has anyone else faced something like this? What was the problem and how did your mechanic handle it? Appreciate any insights.

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Lexus SC is experiencing overheating and a check engine light issue. The initial suspicion is a thermostat problem. A similar case involved a wiring harness issue, which was resolved by replacing the damaged section, and also included fixing a coolant thermostat malfunction. The suggested approach is to investigate both the wiring and thermostat to prevent further complications.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there, sounds like you're having quite a ride with your SC. I had a somewhat similar issue last year with my 2007 Lexus LS - also petrol. The sneaky 'check engine' light started flashing one day and soon after, the car started to overheat a bit especially when I hit traffic. I was also a bit resistant, but trust me when I say you don't want to wait too long. It turned out, in my case, it was an issue with the wiring harness. One of the wires was damaged, causing a disruption in the electrical flow. It was a pretty serious job because the wiring harness is essentially a network of wires that connects to other various components of the car. So yeah it wasn't the happiest day in my book when I found that out. But hey, once they replaced the damaged section of the wiring harness, my ride was back to running smooth. Hope this helps and good luck with your SC. Cheers!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience with your LS! That sounds like a real pain to sort out, but I'm glad you got your ride running smooth again. Definitely don't want to be stuck in an overheating car in traffic! Just out of curiosity, do you recall how much that wiring harness issue set you back? And since you had it fixed, any other issues come up that might've been related to it? Always good to be prepared, you know? Cheers!

Hey! Yeah, the wiring harness issue was a bit of a bummer. Set me back around 170 Euro to fix, but totally worth it considering the comfort of knowing my LS wouldn't fail on me suddenly. Since getting that sorted out, haven't had any other related glitches. Interestingly, you mentioned a potential thermostat issue earlier? Was bang on! I did have a coolant thermostat malfunction but that was fixed when I saw the mechanic for the harness issue. Two birds, one stone kinda situation. So right now, it's all smooth sailing. Hope your SC stops playing up soon too! Keep me posted! Cheers!

Thanks for the heads-up! 170 Euro doesn't sound like a small sum, but I agree about it being worth the peace of mind. Interesting about the coolant thermostat malfunction too, might get that checked out while I'm at it. Will definitely keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks again, and here's to smooth sailing for all our rides! Cheers!
