Seeking Advice on '07 Volvo V50 Engine Issue: Low Power, Poor Fuel Economy, Valve Noise, and Metal Shavings in Oil

Check engine light on

Metal shavings in oil

Weird engine noise

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Valve adjustment noise

Hey folks, I've got an '07 Volvo V50 running on Gasoline and I've been noticing it acting a bit off lately. The engine's been shaky and seems to have lost power, fuel economy is down, and there's a weird noise coming from the valve. On top of that, it's jerking upon acceleration and the check engine light is on. I even found some metal shavings in the oil. My best guess is something going wrong with the camshaft adjustment but I'd love to hear your thoughts or similar experiences. Have anyone faced a similar issue and how did your workshop resolve it? Any pointers would be much appreciated!

Hey there, I'm no expert but have some car tinkering experience. I own a similar '05 Volvo S60, so we're in the same boat. Your problem reminds me of an issue I had a while back: one of the neck shaft solenoid valves was defective and had no power supply. I ended up coughing up 250 Euro to get it fixed. My go-to workshop diagnosed and resolved it. They replaced the defective solenoid valve, cleaned up the metal shavings, and restored the power supply. By and large, the big shake-up in my engine's behavior was addressed. Out of curiosity, do you maintain your car regularly, like oil changes and the sorts? Any after-market modifications? You know, to be able to share more details, it'll help if I can have the full vehicle history. Feel free to ask if you want any more info - car probs are pesky but sorting 'em out can be a silver lining.

Hey! Thanks for sharing, that sounds like a plausible solution. I do keep my car's maintenance up to date, although she's clocked about 143534 KM so far. Last service was only a few months ago, no major mods besides a new air filter and some quality aftermarket rims. I dread thinking about the garage bill, but I guess that's the price for keeping old beauties like ours alive, right? Let's see what the pros at my usual workshop have to say - bucks up for no more shaky rides!

Heyo, no problem, happy to share my own car-experiences! She's clocked a good mileage, hasn't she? But with regular maintenance, the age shouldn't be a bother. Nice touch with the air filter and rims! Enhances function and form, love it. About the garage bill, well, you're right, it is part of the deal when we opt for keeping the old but gold machines going. And let's be honest, there is something satisfying about “fixing” the issues by sorting it out, it's almost liking winning a battle. By the way, make sure to ask your workshop to also check the timing belt, given the mileage and symptoms. It could be the culprit too. Keep us posted on what they find. Crossing my fingers it's just something minor! Here's to many more kilos of smooth rides in our old Timely Swedes! Cheers.

Yo! For sure, I'm all for preserving the classics. I guess no pain, no automotive gain huh? Thanks for the timing belt tip, I'll definitely bring that up with the mechanics. You're right, there's a certain satisfaction in conquering these vehicular challenges - feels like unraveling mysteries, yeah? I'm planning on getting the car to the service station this weekend. I'll keep y'all updated on the findings. So here's raising a grease-stained wrench to troubleshooting and the indomitable spirit of us Volvo lovers. Rock n’ roll, my friend!
