Seeking Advice on '07 Volvo S60 Engine Problems: Check Engine Light, Power Loss and Rough Running

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Engine shuts off by itself

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Hey folks, I'm having a bit of a weird issue with my '07 Volvo S60 that runs on gas. Lately, it's showing a lit check engine light, turns off on its own, and sadly, I'm also facing a power loss. The engine's running pretty rough, jerks when I try to speed up and burns more fuel than usual. I suspect it might be a problem with the throttle valve potentiometer, but I don't know for sure. Has anyone come across such problems and got them diagnosed or fixed at their workshop? Any specific tips or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey there, I had a similar problem with my '05 Volvo S80. I've got some experience with cars, but definitely not an expert. At my local workshop, they ended up diagnosing a defect in the internal mechanics of the throttle valve. To fix it, I coughed up around 345 Euro, which seemed a bit steep, but it did the job. Though, without knowing the specifics of your S60 - engine type, mileage, if you've noticed any specific conditions when the issues occur, etc., it's a bit hard to suggest anything more accurate. Could you give us a little more info about your vehicle? Hope this helps!

Hey, Thanks for the help! It's a gasoline engine and my Volvo's pushed 84484 KM on the odometer. Last service was done fairly recently, but it seems like trouble is never far behind, huh? The power loss issue usually happens when I'm trying to speed up after slowing down at traffic signals, or sometimes even during regular drives. It's a weirdly consistent inconsistency. I guess I'll have to take it into the workshop and see what they say. Gonna hit the wallet hard, but I suppose if it gets rid of the problems... Thanks again!

Hey, Certainly, it would appear that fortune isn't favoring our Swedish chariots, huh? Your Volvo's symptoms really do sound exactly like what my S80 was acting up with. Given the way it's behaving, especially with those specific driving situations you mentioned, it definitely reinforces my initial hunch of it being the throttle valve potentiometer- Just like it was in my case. Also, considering your car's mileage, some of the components might have started to traditional wear and tear. When things like these start happening, sadly, it’s usually a domino effect of one thing correcting leading to finding another problem. Fixing this issue did cost me a pretty penny, but it was worth it to see my trusty steed back in action and behaved nicely. I'd recommend taking it to your local Volvo service center; they have certified techs who know their stuff and can diagnose the exact issue without much fuss. It's definitely going to be an investment, but if it gives you peace of mind and a smooth ride again, I'd say it's worth it. Hope everything turns out fine. Let us know what they ended up diagnosing and fixing! P.S. - Pro-tip: Issues like these can be a bummer, especially on the pocket. You might want to consider setting up a separate savings pot for car-related expenses. It’s been a lifesaver for me. Good luck!

Hey, You're absolutely right. I'm also starting to think that it's indeed the potentiometer that's acting up, just like in your case. And about the mileage, no doubt, it might be causing some parts to give me hell. Your suggestion makes perfect sense. I reckon I'll take it to the Volvo service center as you suggested. I do trust them more than those sketchy mechanics who aren't familiar with Volvos. They might end up doing more bad than good. I'm dreading the cost but it's a price I must pay to get my old girl back in shape, I guess. Also, thank you for that tip, it's a solid idea. Going forward, I'll definitely start to set some money aside for such unexpected car-related expenses. You truly learn something new every day. Thanks again. I'll update you once we figure out what the heck is wrong. Here's hoping everything irons out soon!
