Seeking Advice on '07 Fiat Siena's Engine Issues Possibly Related to Camshaft Adjustment

Jerking on acceleration

Weird engine noise

Check engine light on

Valve adjustment noise

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Metal shavings in oil

Hey, I'm struggling a bit with my '07 Fiat Siena, it's a gasoline model, and she's not running like she used to. Got the check engine light on, drop in power, and the engine feels unsteady - sort of jerks when I try to accelerate. Fuel economy's gone south and I can hear some valve adjustment noise and other weird noises from the engine. On top of all these, I found metal shavings in the oil. My hunch is that it might be a problem with the camshaft adjustment, but I'm not 100% sure and would love to get some input from those of you who might've had the same problem. Can you guys share your experiences, how you identified the issue, and what the workshop did to fix it? Any tips or advice would be super helpful! Cheers.

Hey! It looks like our old chuggers' have more in common than the brand. I had a very similar problem with my '05 Fiat Palio. I'm no car expert, just been working on cars since my teens and have picked up the basics, so some experience I guess. Turned out the culprit in my case was a defective valve servomotor. My poor baby's symptoms were similar to yours - reduced power, choppy acceleration, abnormal noises, and metal bits in the oil. The workshop guys confirmed it, ran tests, and recommended changing the whole unit. These last-minute trips to the workshop always create a dent in the wallet, don't they? Cost me around 405€ to get my lass back on track, but she's been smooth sailing since then. Anyway, I hope this helps with your issue. Just out of curiosity, have there been any recent changes to the car? Servicing, oil change, aftermarket parts? Could help to narrow down the issue. Keep us posted!

Hey! Thanks for that detailed insight, much appreciated. Yes, our old beauties can surprise us sometimes but I guess there is always a solution too. To answer you, I had her last serviced about a month ago, she underwent a simple tune-up, nothing major, just the routine stuff. The mileage's at 66551 km and she hadn't shown any signs of complaints before this. Honestly, I've been ignoring the valve adjustment noise for a bit, maybe I should have paid more attention. I'll check with my local garage about the valve servomotor, it sounds like we've got a match. Let’s see what they have to say. Will keep you guys in loop. Finger crossed!

Ah! You're not alone. We often tend to ignore those soft ticking noises until they turn into a growl, right? I did the same. With the valve servomotor issue, the symptoms started showing for me after a service too. And since our cars share a lineage (and obviously symptoms), my guess is it could be the same issue you’re dealing with. Nothing major, but nipping it in the bud can save you more money in the long run, and of course, keep the old beauty alive longer. Anyway, feel free to reach out if you need any more details from my end, always happy to help a fellow Fiat owner. Can't wait to hear what your garage has to say. Good luck!

Right you are, bud! It's all those routine rattles we ignore that finally make the wallet cry. I've taken in your advice and I'll be visiting the workshop as soon as I can. I do hope it's nothing major and the old gal can motor on for a few more years at least. Thanks a ton for all your help and for sharing your experience. And yes, I'll keep you all posted about the diagnosis and the fix. Until then, safe and happy driving everyone!
