Seeking Advice on '03 Nissan Terrano's Engine Issues Possibly Related to Camshaft Sensor

Jerking on acceleration

Hey guys, I've got a weird issue with my '03 Nissan Terrano (gasoline). The check engine light is on, there's a noticeable drop in power, and the engine seems kinda unstable. It's also resisting to start, jerking when I try to accelerate, and stalling out when idle. I'm suspicious the camshaft sensor might be the culprit. Anyone experienced something like this and busted the problem? Would love to hear how you handled it at your workshop and any advice would help me out a lot. Thanks!

Hey there! I'm not a car expert by any means, but have some experience tinkering around. I had a similar issue with my '01 Nissan X-Trail not too long ago and it turned out to be the sensor wheel on the camshafts. My workshop said the sensor was unable to correctly read the camshaft's position, so the engine could not operate properly, hence the power drops, jerky acceleration, and stalling when idling. Just like in your case, my check engine light was also on. I coughed up 695 Euro to get it fixed, but it was totally worth it since the issue was resolved. To pinpoint your problem better, could you tell me more about your vehicle's condition and history? For instance, are there any recurring problems, or was there any recent maintenance done? Any detail will help!

Hey! Thanks for the response. Well, I recently hit a mileage of 66132 KM. Also, a while ago, I had my alternator replaced when it failed and that's pretty much about it. Other than the current issue, it's been running pretty smooth so far. I feel like my sweet ride is falling sick, and it's a bit heartbreaking. Based on what you shared, I'm even more suspicious that the problem could be with the camshaft sensor. Guess a trip to the workshop is imminent. Good to know how much I might have to shell out, sure gives a heads-up. Cheers for the advice!

Hey there again, I get your concern completely . It's always a bit painful when a trusty companion starts giving troubles. Your mileage is pretty decent for a car of this age. The alternator replacement shouldn't contribute to this issue, so let's shelf that for a moment. One thing I'd suggest before you head to the workshop is, if it's not too much of a bother, try getting an OBD-II scanner and diagnose the error codes. The scanner could confirm whether it's really the camshaft sensor or not. The price I mentioned was for my ride, and may vary depending on the workshop labor cost, but it would be somewhere around that ballpark. Hope I was able to help you out a bit! Keep us updated with how things go at the workshop. Wish you get it back to full health soon! Safe drive!

Hey, thanks a bunch for the suggestion and kind words! The OBD-II scanner sounds like a good idea. I'll get my hands on one and check the error codes before booking a workshop appointment. I do hope it's just the sensor that needs replacing and nothing severe. Fingers crossed! I'll keep you guys updated once I figure out what's exactly wrong and how the repair proceeds. Thanks again for your time, really appreciate it! Till then, happy and safe driving to you too! Cheers!
