Seeking Advice for Persistent Glow Plug Issues in 2013 Lexus IS Diesel Engine

Check engine light on

Car won't start

Pre-glow light won't turn off

Poor fuel economy

Longer cold start time

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

DPF regeneration failure

Hey guys, I'm dealing with a strange problem in my 2013 Lexus IS Diesel engine. The pre-glow light just stays on, there's black smoke puffing out when I step on it and that dreaded check engine light won't turn off. Cold start takes way longer than it should, sometimes it doesn't even kick-start at all. I also noticed the fuel economy has gotten pretty poor and my DPF regeneration seems to be failing. I'm suspecting something's up with my glow plug. Anyone with similar problems or who has managed to fix this? Do share your experiences or any tips you've got, it would be a huge help. Cheers!

Hey! I relate big time. I had a pretty similar problem on my 2012 Lexus IS Diesel, a close cousin to your IS. I'd tag myself as someone with some automotive experience, not exactly an expert, but I've been around cars quite a bit. I noticed the same symptoms: pre-glow light on, check engine light showing, poor fuel economy, and that pesky trouble with cold starts. The workshop guys identified my glow plug as defective due to wear. It set me back around 560 Euro to fix. I would like to know about the mileage and the service history of your car. Also, when was the last time your glow plug was replaced? The extra info might help me have a better guess what's the root cause for your IS. Remember, it's always best to have it checked professionally. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Cheers for the response! My mileage is at 52730 KM and the last service was done not too long ago. As far as the glow plug goes, I never had it replaced before. Seeing as your experience with your Lexus IS lined up pretty much with what's happening to my IS, I reckon it's time I take the old girl in and have the glow plug looked over. I'll be sure to take it to a pro and get it thoroughly checked out. Thanks a ton for your advice fingers crossed it's just the glow plug that's acting up!

Hello again! Good to hear from you. Given the mileage and service history of your car, it totally makes sense. It's due time for the glow plug replacement. I mean, 52k KM is a good run on the original glow plug depending on the kind of use your car gets. I would also recommend getting the fuel system cleaned while you're at it. Your ride is showing signs of a dirty fuel system by puffing out black smoke. Also, the drop in fuel economy and trouble with DPF regeneration can be associated with it. Cleansing the fuel system can improve engine performance and fuel economy, and it might make the DPF regeneration process smoother. But get that glow plug sorted first, most likely it's a big part of the problem in your case. Take care and I hope things work out well for your Lexus IS. Don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions, happy to share more from my experience. Good luck!

Thanks again! You've been a top help! Glow plug replacement and a fuel system cleanup it is then. You're right on, with the black smoke and all, something's definitely off with the fuel system. I'll post an update on the situation once everything's done and dusted. Cheers for all the helpful tips, they've pointed me in the right direction. Can't thank you enough! Fingers crossed it gets my Lexus IS up to speed again. Until next time, take care and happy motoring!
