Seeking Advice for Battery and Voltage Issues in 2008 Lexus LX Diesel

Dim or flickering lights

Weak battery when starting the engine

Hey! I'm scratching my head over an issue with my 2008 Lexus LX diesel. Lately, the battery's been struggling to start the engine, and I've had issues with dimming and flickering lights. I'm suspecting it might be an undervoltage issue. Have any of you experienced this? If so, how did your workshop tackle the problem? Any input or pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, sounds like your issue matches up pretty closely to an experience I had with my 2003 Lexus RX. I've got some experience tinkering with cars but nothing professional. I took it into my local garage when I also had problems starting up and dim lights. Turns out, my problem was exactly what you're suspecting, an empty/defective battery. Cost me 290 Euro to get it replaced and sorted. Without too much to go on, could you give a bit more info about your battery's condition? How old, any recent cold weather, and trouble before? Should be able to help you a bit more with those details. Cheers!

G'day, thank you for your prompt reply! Sorry I should’a mentioned earlier about my battery. Well, the battery itself is coming up on two years old, no cold weather in sight, and it had been working like a charm before these issues cropped up. As far as mileage goes, my LX has been driven whole 108137 KM so the battery definitely has got some usage, but I didn't expect it crapping out this soon. Do you reckon this could still be a battery issue, or should I be looking at my alternator or something else entirely? Cheers for the help!

Hey again! Firstly, I'm glad to see you sticking with the good ol' Lexus! They're truly one of a kind. Now, let's crack down on that issue. Your battery's age doesn't seem to be the problem here. Usually, they're good for at least three years, in my experience. Since you're not dealing with cold weather, that rules out another common battery culprit. Hitting over a 100k on the mileage is a feat, kudos to you! But with it can come wear and tear on your vehicle's electrical system. I'd say it’s time to get your alternator checked. You see, flickering lights and difficulty in starting can also be due to a faulty alternator. Once its not able to properly charge the battery, you'll experience these symptoms. Quickly, there’s another thing you might want to check. See if there's any corrosion on the battery terminals. This could also lead to undervoltage detected in your car. Hold your horses from buying a battery right away and get your local workshop to check on these points. Sure, it might not always be as dramatic as my dead battery situation, but it's always smart to make sure before making any spend. Hope this helps! Keep us posted how it turns out, yeah? Cheers!

Hey, seriously, thanks heaps for your thorough advice! Going by what you've suggested, I reckon I should get the alternator and battery terminals inspected first before spending big bucks on a new battery. Never occurred to me that it could be the alternator or corrosion causing all this drama. Hopefully, it’s something easy (and cheap) to fix! I’ll keep you posted once I get things checked out. Thanks for lending a hand and sharing your expertise, really appreciate it. Till then, take care and safe driving! Cheers!
