Seeking Advice for 2020 Mazda 6 Diesel Problems: Check Engine Light, Black Smoke, Power Loss, and Possible DPF Issue

Loss of engine power

|

Check engine light on

|

DPF regeneration failure

|

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

|

Strong exhaust smell

|

Loud exhaust

Hey everyone, I've been having a bit of a nightmare with my 2020 Mazda 6 Diesel recently. Been noticing black smoke puffing out of the exhaust when I accelerate, a persistent check engine light, drop in power, and an issue with the DPF regeneration. There's even this strong, foul smell from the exhaust, and it's noticeably louder than before. I'm suspecting the Diesel particle filter might be near its end, but would appreciate your insights or experiences to confirm it. Especially if you've had a similar problem, what did your mechanic do to fix it? What was your overall experience like in dealing with this? Any advice or pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey there! Funny you mentioned a Mazda 6 Diesel - I've got a 2018 Mazda CX-5 Diesel and I had a similar problem not too long ago. My car knowledge isn't exactly high, but I've learnt a few things over the years. Anyway, the symptoms you described, yep, they're a dead giveaway of a failing DPF - black smoke, reduced power, that lovely DPF light and let's not forget the dreadful smell...it was all there for me too. What I did, I took it to my trusty mechanic at my local garage. He's always honest with me, never trying to sell me on unnecessary repairs. Sure enough the DPF was internally defective and needed replacing which cost me around 1550€. Once it was done, my CX-5 was as good as new, back on the road and feet better. That said, there could be other issues at play, so do make sure you get a comprehensive diagnosis to avoid any nasty surprises later on. By the way, maybe you can help me provide a better answer by letting me know a bit more about your Mazda. Like are there any other warning lights or messages popping up? And do you know how many miles are on the DPF? With that info, we might be able to help you understand the issue better.

Hi! Appreciate your response and for sharing your experience. It does sound similar to what I'm going through right now with my Mazda. It's comforting, in a strange way, to know it's not just me this has happened to! To answer your questions, the only other light I've seen pop up is the 'Engine Management' warning light, but my guess is it might be linked to the DPF problems. As for the DPF mileage, I don't have that specific figure. What I do know is that my entire car's mileage is sitting at 297,576 KM, and the DPF has never been replaced before. I'm hoping it's just the DPF and nothing more serious in nature. Will definitely have it thoroughly diagnosed, though, to avoid further troubles on the road. Thanks again!

Hey again! Based on your car's mileage and the fact you've never replaced the DPF, it's almost certainly causing your problems. Just like it happened with my CX-5, your 'Engine Management' warning light could indeed be related to the DPF issue. Especially with such high mileage and no previous replacement, the filter would be struggling big time. I'm glad to hear you'll take it for a thorough check! As I learnt from my own experience, acting quickly saves a lot of headache (and wallet ache!) further down the line. Just remember, while it's likely to be the DPF, there could be other components contributing to the problem. But fingers crossed, it's just the DPF in your case. Take good care of your Mazda 6 such a great car really. Keep us posted on how you go! Cheers!

Thanks for all the support and advice, really means a lot to me during this stressful situation! I'm now even more convinced it's the DPF. So, I booked an appointment with my mechanic for a thorough examination and hopefully, the fix won't be too painful on the wallet. I'll definitely keep you posted on how things turn out. Thanks so much again. Your guidance has helped me a lot. All the best with your CX-5 too! Cheers!
