Seeking Advice for 2016 Lexus RC Hybrid with Multiple Issues - Possibly Camshaft Adjustment Problem

Valve adjustment noise

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Metal shavings in oil

Weird engine noise

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Hey! I've got a 2016 Lexus RC Hybrid acting up in a weird way. I'm experiencing several issues like the check engine light being on, loss of engine power, unsteady engine, jerky acceleration, poor fuel efficiency, valve adjustment noise, strange engine noise, and found metal shavings in the oil too. My hunch is it might be a camshaft adjustment problem but I'd appreciate any input or similar experiences. Has anyone had these issues and, if so, how did your workshop tackle it? Would love to hear your stories. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! Encountered something pretty close to this with my 2014 Lexus GS Hybrid. My car knowledge is fairly basic, but I've lodged a fair amount of garage time over the years, so I may be able to help a bit. My problems were a bit similar to yours, with the engine noises and reduced power. The workshop pinpointed the issue to a defective neck shaft solenoid valve and a lack of power supply. Their solution? Replacing the valve and fiddling with the electrical setup a bit. The repair set me back by 250 Euro but definitely worth it. Car's been smoother and more efficient since. That said, car conditions can vary. It would help to know more about your vehicle's mileage and overall state. Also, when's the last time you had a professional check on it? Giving these details can result in more accurate advice. Take care!

Hey, thanks for the suggestion! My RC has about 104721 KM on the clock now. My last service was around six months ago, but these issues started acting up a bit after I got it serviced. Your valve replacement option seems like a potential path to look into. I'll definitely bring up the neck shaft solenoid valve and power supply issue with my mechanic. Here's hoping it doesn't break my bank though! Cheers!

Hey back at ya! With over a 100K on the clock, your Lexus is no spring chicken, but it's really not that old either. These cars are built solid. A couple of my friends have crossed the 200,000 KM mark with their hybrids without major issues, just regular servicing. So hang in there, because once this issue is sorted out your RC should be good to go for plenty more miles. You mention that these problems started cropping up after a service. Just a shot in the dark, but any possibility something went askew during the service? Might be worth mentioning this when you visit the workshop. Yeah, the neck shaft solenoid valve was my issue, but remember your car could have a different problem. Don't let them replace parts without a solid diagnosis. Make sure your mechanic checks out everything thoroughly, from the camshaft you suspected to the VVT system, solenoid, wiring and so on. And about emptying your bank, we can only hope for the best. Just remember, it's better to sort these things out sooner rather than later to avoid causing more damage to the engine. All the best with it! Keep us posted on how it turns out. We're all in this together. Let's hope that Lexus spirit holds up!

You're a lifesaver! I love how detailed your advice is. Your point about things possibly going wrong during the service crossed my mind too. I'll be sure to discuss that in-depth with my mechanic along with everything else you mentioned. It's quite inspiring that your friends have crossed such high mileage without significant problems. Hoping my Lexus bounces back after this issue is fixed as I'm super fond of it! The bank part does make me nervous, but as you said, it’s essential to sort things out before they escalate. I’ll head to my workshop ASAP and will keep my fingers crossed. I'll definitely drop an update after getting it checked out. You’re right, we’re all in this together. Let's hope for that Lexus durability to shine through. Cheers!

Let our mechanics help you!
