Loss of engine power

Hey! I'm dealing with a bit of a puzzler with my 2013 Dacia Lodgy Diesel. Recently, she's been giving off black smoke when I accelerate, the check engine light's on all the time, and I've noticed a drop in power in the engine. Plus, she's jerky on acceleration, making a loud hissing sound, and the fuel economy's just not what it used to be. There's a real heavy exhaust smell, too, and a whistling noise that's got me stumped. I think the issue might be with the boost pressure sensor, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone else faced something similar and had it fixed? Would love your thoughts, experiences, and any tips you might have to trouble shoot this. Cheers!

Hey there, I have some experience with cars and faced almost the same issue on my 2011 Dacia Logan a few years back. The symptoms were pretty similar, lots of black smoke, rotten egg smell, terrible fuel economy and the engine light was always on. Rather than the boost pressure sensor, my prob was a clogged Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which I reckon might also be the problem with your Lodgy. I took my ride to my local garage and after a full diagnostics, they confirmed a full DPF was causing the mess. Ended up having to shell out 1325€ to get it fixed. As much as it was a kick in the teeth for my wallet, it was a necessary fix. Might be a good idea to get your Lodgy checked out for a clogged DPF. It'd be great if you could provide more specifics, like the exact model and mileage, to steer you more accurately. All the best!

Appreciate your response! A clogged DPF does sound like it could be causing the issues with my Lodgy. And with regards to your request for more specifics, I'll oblige. My Lodgy is the 1.5 dCi model and she's got 149608 KM on the clock as of my last drive this morning. So yes, she's seen quite a bit of road, which probably accounts for the issues cropping up now. Guess I should look into getting a garage to run a diagnostics on her, like you suggested. Sucks that fixes like these are invariably expensive, but she's been a reliable ride for me, and hopefully this resolves things. Thanks again for the heads up!

Hey, no worries, glad I could help you out a little! Your Dacia Lodgy 1.5 dCi has indeed seen a good bit of terrain. They are generally reliable rides, but with the kind of mileage you've racked up, some wear and tear are inevitable. Honestly, your symptoms sound similar to what I went through with my Logan. Given the mileage and the symptoms you've described, a full or partially blocked DPF could indeed be the villain. It's part of any diesel car’s exhaust system and tackles the soot particles that come from the exhaust gas. However, with time and mileage, these DPFs can become saturated and might need a clean or even replacement in extreme cases. Don't keep yourself in the dark though, take the Lodgy to a garage you trust and let them run a full diagnostics. If the DPF is the issue, you might look at a somewhat hefty bill but it’s worth getting sorted. It might hurt the pockets but a non-functional or clogged DPF can damage your car's engine in the long run. Remember, better safe than sorry. Let me know how you get on! Cheers.

Sure thing! Your hunch about the DPF could very well be right considering what you went through with your Logan. With my Lodgy's mileage, I can't say I'm surprised that wear and tear are showing up as they are. I'll take your advice and share the details with a trusty garage to get a full diagnosis. The potential bill does have me wincing a bit, but you're right about it being better to pay now than deal with a more severe engine problem later. Your feedback's been a tremendous help in giving me some direction on this! Once I get the diagnosis done and hopefully get the issue sorted, I’ll make sure to share an update here. Your advice is much appreciated. Cheers!
