Seeking Advice for 2009 Lexus IS Diesel Emitting Black Smoke and Experiencing Power Loss Due to Potential DPF Issue

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

|

Loss of engine power

|

DPF regeneration failure

|

Strong exhaust smell

Hey fellow car lovers, I've been dealing with something peculiar with my 2009 Lexus IS Diesel and I could use some advice. She's chuffing out black smoke during acceleration, with the Check engine light tagged along, and there's a noticeable loss in power. A bit nosy on the exhaust too and seems to fail at DPF regeneration. I'm speculating a loaded Diesel particulate filter might be the culprit. Anyone been down this road before with a similar situation? How did your local garage tackle the issue? Appreciate any tips or stories you could share!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2007 Lexus IS Diesel. I have some experience dealing with car troubles - I'm no expert, but I've had to handle a few problems here and there. I took mine to the local workshop as soon as it gave me the same symptoms. It did turn out to be a diesel particulate filter issue, due to the high mileage. They suggested a change was required as it was pretty much loaded and beyond regeneration point. The whole fix put me back by about 1550€. From your description, your problem sounds pretty similar to what I had. Can you tell me more about your car's mileage and its maintenance history? That would make it easier to share more specific advice.

Hey! I appreciate your response! My Lexus IS has been pretty reliable for long stretches, so this problem threw me for a bit. She's done around 108529 KM, so I guess that's a significant amount. Had her latest service just a few months back though, and everything was very shipshape then. However, your point on the DPF issue due to high mileage makes sense. If I’ve gotta change it out, I guess I have to dig into the savings then! Does the whole operation take a lot of time?

Hey! No problem, glad I could help! Your Lexus's mileage is indeed significant, and with that much on the odometer, a DPF issue wouldn't surprise me. As for the time it takes, in my case it was a day's job. I dropped the car off at the workshop in the morning and picked it up in the evening. They spent most of the day on it - replacing the DPF isn't a quick job since it's usually located in a pretty inaccessible place. You'll probably want to plan for a day without your car. Don't worry about your savings too much though – better to get it sorted out now before it causes more problems! These cars are built to last, and with a new DPF, your Lexus should be good to go for another long stretch! Drive safe!

That's really helpful info! A day’s job doesn't sound terrible at all. Guess I'll have to get this sorted soon then, better safe than sorry. As for the costs, well, we all know maintenance is part of the car-owning game. Thanks a bunch for going through the trouble to help me out. Time to call my local garage and book an appointment. Hopefully, she'll be back to her prime soon. Happy driving, and thanks again!
