Poor fuel economy

Hey everyone, I'm wrestling with this puzzling issue on my 2007 Volvo XC90 Hybrid. Black smoke's puffing out from the exhaust when I hit the gas, the check engine light's on, I'm feeling a definite power dip, and the engine's pretty unsteady. Additionally, there are jerks on acceleration and worse, sometimes the car downright refuses to start. My fuel economy's taken a nosedive and the engine stalls and shakes when idling. I've been suspecting some problems with the ignition coil or perhaps misfiring, but I'd really appreciate if anyone could help me narrow this down further. Can anyone share similar experiences and how you had this sorted out in a workshop? Any pointers to diagnose and fix this issue would be a massive help. Cheers!

Hey, I had a similar snafu with my 2005 Volvo S80. I'd say I have some experience with cars, not a pro, but can handle my way around. Sounds like your problem could be the same as mine was. I faced similar symptoms and it turned out to be a defective cable connection to the ignition coil. I took it to my trusty local workshop, they ran a check and pinpointed the issue. Ended up paying around 365 Euro to get it fixed. However, this is based on the symptoms you described above and the issue I had on my car, which were matching. Can you provide a bit more info about your vehicle? Also, have you noticed any unusual noises or smells, especially when the vehicle refuses to start? This info could help me better understand your problem and provide you with a more precise answer. Take care!

Appreciate the response. My car's also got a mileage of about 81157KM and the last service was done pretty recently. No unusual noises, but there's definitely this funny, sorta burnt odor when I try to start it and it refuses. I checked the cables and they seem intact. Now I'm wondering if it's a sparkplug issue or a messed up Fuel Control Module. You think they might be the culprits? Cheers!

Hey again, the additional details surely help. Since you've mentioned a burnt odor, this could be related to your fuel system - potentially the Fuel Control Module like you guessed. This, along with the black smoke from the exhaust, might be due to an overly rich fuel mixture which can cause poor fuel economy and the shaking and stalling while idling. Sparkplugs could be a suspect too as they could cause misfiring or a lack of engine power, but they usually wouldn't cause a car refusing to start completely. The burnt smell partly makes me think that this might be an issue with the fuel injector or the fuel pump but, frankly, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of an issue with the fuel control module either. From my experience, I'd suggest getting a comprehensive examination in a workshop which should include checking for any error codes stored in the car's computer. It's a bit tricky to pinpoint the exact issue without a mechanic physically looking at it. These are just my two cents, from a who had a similar, yet different, issue with his Volvo! Take care and let me know how it goes, cheers!

Thanks a ton for your insights. You've given me a fair idea of the possibilities to explore further. I think I'll follow your advice and take my ride to a reliable workshop for a detailed check. I'll definitely mention the suspects you've pointed out, the Fuel Control Module, fuel pump, and fuel injectors. Annoying as the issue has been, I've learned quite a bit today! I'll be sure to update once I get back from the workshop. Cheers for now!
