Seat Alhambra particulate filter lights up and the exhaust smokes more than normal

Check engine light on

|

DPF regeneration failure

|

Strong exhaust smell

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Hey everyone, I have a 2012 Seat Alhambra (diesel) with 105432 km on the clock. I'm currently worried about the car: black smoke when accelerating, check engine light on, loss of power, DPF regeneration fails and strong exhaust odor. I suspect that the diesel particulate filter is heavily loaded. Didn't have a good experience at the last workshop visit either. Can anyone tell me about similar problems and how you solved them? Experiences with good workshops are also welcome! Thank you!

Hey, I drive a 2015 Seat Leon Diesel and had similar problems: black smoke, engine control light, loss of power and problems with DPF regeneration. In my case, the diesel particulate filter was completely full due to the high mileage. They cleaned the DPF at the workshop and then reinstalled it. In some cases, however, the DPF has to be replaced if it is too badly damaged. It's definitely a serious matter because a malfunctioning DPF can greatly affect engine performance and cause long-term damage. Have the filter checked and cleaned as soon as possible. Replace the DPF if necessary. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for your tip! Do you happen to remember how much it cost you to clean or replace the DPF? And were there any other problems after the repair or has everything been running smoothly again since then? Best regards!

Hey, sure, I can tell you more about it. So, I finally had the problem with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) fixed at the garage. Not only did I need to have it cleaned, but the filter was damaged due to the high mileage and had to be replaced. The whole thing cost me €1550. Since the repair, my Leon has been running smoothly again. No more check engine light, no more black smoke and full power again. It was definitely the right decision to have the DPF replaced. Hope this helps you! Good luck with your Alhambra! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the info! 1550 is of course a tidy sum, but if everything really runs smoothly again afterwards, it seems worth it to me. I've now made an appointment with a garage nearby, which I hope will be a bit more competent than the last one. Keep your fingers crossed that they can find and fix the problem quickly. It would be a real relief to have the Alhambra fully functional again without these annoying symptoms. If anyone else can recommend good mechanics in Berlin, please let me know! Best regards and thanks again for the tips!

Hi Ahmed, since you've already replaced the turbo and EGR valve, the black smoke could be due to a clogged or damaged diesel particulate filter (DPF). This can cause incomplete combustion of the diesel, resulting in black smoke. I recommend having your DPF checked and cleaned or replaced if necessary. Please keep us updated on your progress.
