RS7 Climate Control & AC Failure: Sensor Investigation

A/C System Not Engaging

|

Automatic temperature control no longer works

|

Fault stored

My RS7 is acting up with the climate control system. The auto temp settings stopped working completely and the AC wont turn on at all. Got an error code stored but havent pulled it yet. Im thinking its the interior temp sensor causing these issues. The car is a 2018 model with 184512km on the clock. Has anyone experienced similar sensor issues and can recommend what to check first? Want to avoid another bad mechanic experience and get some insights before taking it in.

Had the same climate regulation problems on my 2015 S6. The temperature reading was completely off and climate control became unresponsive. After sensor diagnostics, it turned out the ambient temperature sensor harness had severe corrosion at the connector pins. The main symptoms matched exactly: no auto climate function, AC not engaging, and erratic temperature readings. This is a known sensor issue in these models. The problem lies in the wiring connection rather than the sensor itself in most cases. The repair involved cleaning the connector pins and replacing the harness section that connects to the sensor. While not a major repair cost-wise, leaving it unfixed can lead to complete climate system failure and potential damage to other HVAC components. First step should be getting that error code read, it will likely point to a communication fault with the temperature sensor. The connector is located behind the front bumper cover, but professional inspection is recommended since accessing it requires partial disassembly of the front end. Worth checking both interior and exterior temperature sensors as they work together for proper climate system function. These sensor issues are fairly common after 150000km on these platforms.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. These sensor issues definitely sound similar to what I experienced. My HVAC sensor readings were also all over the place before the system stopped working completely. Did you remember roughly how much the repair cost in your case? Also curious if youve had any other climate control problems since getting the harness fixed? My RS7 is still at the shop but Im trying to budget for potential future issues with the temperature control system.

Thanks for asking about the costs. My climate control issues were fully resolved once the mechanic fixed the faulty interior temperature sensor. The repair bill came to 95 Euro for fixing the damaged cable connection to the HVAC sensor. Pretty reasonable considering the initial worry about potential major system failure. Since the repair, the temperature control system has worked flawlessly for over 18 months now. No more erratic readings or system shutdowns. The auto climate function and AC are back to normal operation. Regular sensor diagnostics during maintenance show everything is functioning as intended. Based on my experience, once the wiring connection issue is properly addressed, these temperature sensor problems rarely come back. The climate regulation system in these models is generally quite reliable after fixing the root cause.

Going to the mechanic turned out to be quite straightforward. After checking multiple sensor readings, they confirmed the wiring harness issue that others mentioned. The repair only took about 2 hours and cost 180 Euro including labor. The mechanic showed me the corroded connector pins, they were in worse shape than expected. Good thing I caught it early before it caused more extensive damage to the climate regulation system. The temperature sensor replacement wasnt necessary since the issue was just the wiring. Its been 3 weeks since the repair and the climate control is working perfectly again. Auto temp settings are responsive and AC blows cold like it should. Definitely feel more confident now knowing what to watch for if sensor issues come up again.
