RS5 Steering Column Failure: Repair Cost Reality Check

Looking for advice on my 2023 RS5 with electric steering column issues. The adjustment no longer works and throws an error code. Car has 55143km and runs otherwise fine. Has anyone dealt with similar electric adjustment problems and can share what the repair process and costs looked like at their shop? Previous mechanic experience has me worried about getting overcharged for a simple mechanical fault.

Had similar steering column adjustment issues with my 2020 S5. The electric adjustment stopped responding completely and displayed error messages on startup. The main problem turned out to be a faulty wiring harness connection at the steering column module. This is a known weakness point where cables can work loose or develop poor contact over time. The repair process involved accessing the steering column assembly and replacing the entire wiring harness connector block. While this sounds like a simple cable connection issue, reaching the components requires partial dismantling of the steering column area. The repair must be done carefully since it involves safety-critical systems. The work took about 4 hours at the shop. They had to run full system diagnostics and recalibrate the steering column adjustment after repair. This is not a DIY job due to the programming requirements and safety implications. Since you mentioned concerns about pricing, know that the labor time is justified by the complex disassembly required to access the column adjustment mechanism. The electric adjustment system repair needs specialized diagnostic equipment to properly reset everything. Based on the symptoms you describe, it sounds very similar to what I experienced. Would recommend having it checked soon since steering column issues can potentially affect other safety systems.

Thanks for sharing your S5 experience. Really helpful to hear about the wiring harness being the culprit for your electric steering column problems. My RS5 is at the shop now and they mentioned similar issues with the electronic steering system connections. The technician also pointed out the need for specialized diagnostic equipment for the repair. Can you recall what the total repair cost was in your case? Also wondering if youve had any other steering-related issues pop up since the fix?

Following up about the RS5 steering repair. The mechanic found and fixed the electric steering column adjustment issue last week. Like your case, it came down to a faulty cable connection in the column assembly. Total cost was 95 Euro for the repair including the new connector block. The steering failure warning disappeared after they replaced the defective wiring components and recalibrated the system. No mechanical fault messages or steering problems since the fix. The electric adjustment now works perfectly smooth again. The technical diagnosis confirmed what you experienced, the column adjustment mechanism itself was fine, just the electrical connections needed attention. Having the right diagnostic equipment made a big difference in quickly pinpointing the exact issue. Good to know these steering system problems are fixable without major component replacement. The repair cost ended up being quite reasonable considering the specialized work involved with the steering column.

Thanks, glad the electric steering repair worked out. After taking my RS5 to the shop, they diagnosed a similar wiring issue in the column adjustment mechanism. The total repair came to 850 Euro, which covered parts, labor and recalibration. The mechanic walked me through the whole process, they had to partially dismantle the steering column to access and replace the faulty wiring harness. The diagnostic testing confirmed no other mechanical fault issues were present. It took them about 5 hours total to complete the repair. After reconnecting everything and running the calibration, the electric adjustment is working perfectly again. No warning messages or problems since the fix. While the cost was higher than expected, I understand why after seeing the complex work involved with the steering column. Having it done by qualified techs with the right diagnostic equipment was worth it for the safety aspect.
