RS4 Transmission Failure: Parking Lock & Gear Issues

Having serious transmission issues with my 2005 RS4 (194k km). Car wont start and check engine light is on. Noticed rough shifting and gearbox slipping lately. When checking the error codes, it points to automatic transmission parking position problems. Any tips on what to expect when taking it to a mechanic? Had some bad experiences with shops before and want to know if others dealt with similar transmission sensor or gear shifter problems. Want to avoid getting ripped off while fixing this gear linkage issue.

Had similar automatic transmission issues with my 2008 S5. The symptoms match exactly what you describe, rough shifting, gear slipping, and inability to start due to shift lock problems. The root cause was a faulty neutral position sensor combined with worn gear linkage bushings. These components work together to ensure proper gear engagement and parking lock function. When they fail, the transmission control unit receives incorrect position data, triggering the check engine light. The repair required: Replacement of the neutral position sensor, New gear linkage assembly, Recalibration of the transmission control unit, Adjustment of the park brake mechanism This was a serious repair that needed specialized diagnostic equipment. The transmission had to be partially dismantled to access the affected components. Would strongly recommend having this done at a shop with certified transmission specialists, as incorrect repairs can cause additional damage to the automatic transmission. Given the similar model and symptoms, your RS4 likely needs comparable work. The high mileage suggests these components are due for replacement. Make sure to get a detailed diagnostic report before authorizing repairs.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Currently dealing with similar issues on my RS4 after getting it fixed. The gear shifter replacement solved most problems but still getting occasional transmission sensor warnings. Curious how much the total repair cost was in your case and if you had any recurring issues afterward? Would help me figure out if my current repair quotes are reasonable.

Thanks for asking about the follow-up. After seeing the mechanic for my S5 transmission issues, the automatic transmission parking position problem was completely resolved. The repair centered on replacing a defective control unit, which cost 1000 Euro. The transmission issues you mention with sensor warnings could indicate the job wasnt fully completed. My repair included a complete system reset and recalibration after the control unit replacement, which prevented any recurring shift lock warnings. The gear linkage repair you had done is often just part of the solution. These transmissions typically need a full electronic reset to properly recognize the new components. Since youre still getting warnings, it might be worth having the shop verify all sensors are properly calibrated and communicating with the new parts. After my repair, the transmission has worked flawlessly, no more error codes or shifting problems. For your ongoing sensor warnings, consider having the diagnostic system fully scanned to identify any remaining communication issues between the transmission control unit and sensors.

Just got back from the mechanic after dealing with my RS4 transmission issues. The gear shifter replacement plus recalibration of all transmission sensors cost 1200 Euro total. The shop found additional wear in the neutral position switch which they replaced while the transmission was opened up. Repair took 2 days but the results are worth it. No more check engine lights and the gear changes are smooth again. The transmission repair specialist explained everything clearly and showed me the worn parts. Much better experience than my previous shop visits. Still monitoring for any transmission issues but so far the car runs like new. Good to know others had similar problems fixed successfully. Will definitely keep up with regular transmission maintenance from now on to avoid future gear linkage problems.
