Thanks for sharing your experience. My steering issues got resolved with a similar repair. The power steering pump and hydraulic lines were the main culprits, along with contaminated fluid. The steering column itself was fine, thankfully. Would you mind sharing what the total repair cost was for your S4? Also curious if youve had any other steering-related problems since the fix. My repair was about six months ago and its been running smoothly, but always good to know what to watch out for.
Since the steering repair on my S4, everything has worked flawlessly. The warning lights disappeared immediately after the fix, and the steering wheel feels properly responsive again. The mechanic found a loose connection in the power steering system wiring that was causing the malfunction. The total cost came to 95 Euro for fixing the faulty cable connection. Much cheaper than I initially feared, as I was worried the steering rack or steering pump might need replacement. The pressure hose and other components were all in good condition, so no additional parts were needed. No steering-related issues have occurred in the past year since the repair. The steering system maintains consistent pressure and the wheel turns smoothly without any vibration. Regular fluid checks show no signs of leaks or contamination. Keep monitoring your fluid levels though, its often the first indicator if the steering pump or pressure components start developing problems again.
Thanks for the advice. Finally got my RS4 sorted after a nerve-wracking week. Took it to a new mechanic who diagnosed a faulty power steering pump and contaminated hydraulic fluid. The steering column and rack were fine, but the pump failure had allowed metal particles to circulate through the system. Total repair came to 780 Euro including: New power steering pump, System flush, Fresh hydraulic fluid, Labor costs The steering wheel now feels solid again with no vibration or heaviness. The warning light cleared immediately after the repair. Been driving it for about 3 weeks and everything works perfectly, tight handling and smooth turns like it should. Much better experience with this shop compared to my previous mechanic. They pressure tested the whole system first and showed me exactly where the problems were. Saved some money by catching it before the steering rack got damaged.
Had similar symptoms on my 2010 Audi S4. The power steering system showed identical warning signs, heavy steering, vibration, and dashboard alerts. The root cause was a failing power steering pressure hose that started leaking hydraulic fluid. This created inconsistent pressure in the steering system, leading to the loose, spongy feeling. The wheel alignment was still good, but the power steering pump had to work harder to compensate for the fluid loss. This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention since it affects vehicle control and safety. Left unfixed, it can damage the entire steering system, including the pump and rack. The repair involved: Pressure testing the system, Replacing the faulty pressure hose, Flushing the power steering system, Refilling with fresh hydraulic fluid, Recalibrating the steering sensors Worth noting that these symptoms can also indicate a failing steering rack, but starting with a pressure test helps pinpoint if its a leak or component failure. Professional diagnosis is essential since the steering system is complex and safety-critical.
