Rogue Headlights: Toppo's Mysterious Light Switch Drama

Lights are turning on

|

Error in the lighting

Hey everyone, my 2004 Mitsubishi Toppo (53850 KM, gas engine) has been acting up lately. The headlights unsual turn on by themselves, and I'm having trouble with the light switch control. After a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar lighting issues on their Toppo? Would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations for reliable mechanics who actually know how to fix this problem. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2007 Mitsubishi Colt last year. The unusual headlight activation was driving me nuts! Turned out to be a faulty plug connection in the lighting control module. The old connector had corroded over time, causing intermittent electrical issues. My mechanic found that moisture had gotten into the wiring harness near the headlight switch, which made the connections unreliable. They had to clean the corroded terminals, replace the damaged connector, and reseal the wiring harness properly. It wasn't a major repair, but it needed to be done right to prevent future issues. These electrical gremlins are pretty common in older Mitsubishis, especially around the lighting system. Just make sure you find someone who's familiar with electrical diagnostics, it's not something you want a general mechanic guessing at. Fixed mine about 8 months ago, and the lights have been working perfectly since then. Hope this helps point you in the right direction!

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! That sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. It's good to know I'm not the only one who's had this headache. If you don't mind me asking, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the repair? And has everything been running smoothly since, or have you noticed any other electrical quirks popping up?

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! Since I got it fixed last year, everything has been working like a charm, especially the Light switch function, which was the main headache. The repair cost me exactly 222.50€, which included diagnosing the faulty plug connection and fixing it properly. Honestly, looking back, it was worth every cent because I haven't had a single electrical issue since then. You know how annoying those unusual headlight activations were, well, that's completely gone now! It's such a relief not having to worry about my lights having a mind of their own anymore. My Colt's been running perfectly normal, no other electrical gremlins have shown up. Just make sure you find a mechanic who knows their way around electrical systems, it makes all the difference. Let me know if you need any other info! Good luck with getting yours sorted!

Thanks so much for the detailed info! I actually took your advice and got it fixed last week. Found a mechanic who specializes in electrical systems, and guess what? It was exactly what you described, corroded connections in the wiring harness! The repair ended up costing me around 250€, which was totally worth it. No more unusual light shows in my driveway! The mechanic also checked the rest of the electrical system while he was at it, just to be safe. Everything's working perfectly now. Honestly, I'm just relieved to have this sorted. It's been such a headache dealing with those unpredictable lights, especially during night drives. The new mechanic was great too, really took the time to explain what was wrong and how he fixed it. Much better experience than my last mechanic! Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. You saved me from a lot more frustration!
