Renault Latitude Diesel 2011: Loss of power and increased fuel consumption with unusual exhaust odor

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Engine shuts off by itself

Strong exhaust smell

Stalling while idling

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Hi folks, my 2011 Renault Latitude Diesel with 87,095 km mileage has been causing me a lot of stress for a few days now. The car has a strong exhaust smell, coughs black smoke when accelerating and loses power. It also has a rough engine running and jerks when accelerating. The fuel consumption has also increased and it sometimes even stalls when idling. The check engine light is also on. I'm a bit paranoid because I didn't get a good impression at the last workshop visit. I think it could be the fuel level sensor. But I'm not a car person, so I need your help. Have any of you ever had similar problems and could tell me what the mechanic did? Or does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how much it could cost if I get it fixed? Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hi, it sounds like you have similar problems to what I had with my 2008 Renault Megane Diesel. A wiring harness/connector fault was the culprit. The fault was in the main wiring harness, which in my case was worn through and corroded in places, causing various electrical problems. My car showed similar symptoms: high fuel consumption, jerky engine, failure when stationary and the check engine light was activated. My car also had an exhaust smell and smoke emission, indicating incomplete combustion - presumably caused by the defective sensors and control units. To fix it, the mechanic had to replace the faulty wiring harness and clean/replace the damaged plugs. This was definitely a serious matter, not something to be taken lightly. I hope this helps you. You could also have this problem. It's best to visit a workshop as soon as possible before it leads to further complications. Good luck with that!

Hi, thanks for your reply! That definitely sounds like the same problem - such a bummer. I wouldn't have thought that so many complications could be caused by a faulty wiring harness. Do you remember how much the repair cost you? And have you had any other incidents or problems with your Renault since then? Thanks again for your help!

Hi, I'm glad my answer was able to help you! Yes, a faulty wiring harness can really cause a lot of problems. In my case, the repair cost a total of €95, which I thought was really okay for the extent of the problem. Since the visit to the workshop, the fuel level sensor has been working perfectly again. I haven't had to fix anything in this area yet, my Renault is running like clockwork again! I hope it stays that way and that you get just as much help! Don't forget to keep us up to date here on how things are going for you. All the best for the repair!

Hi, thank you very much for the information. 95 sounds really reasonable for the problem and I'm reassured to hear that you didn't have any further problems afterwards. I will definitely listen to your advice and take my Renault to the garage. I will definitely let you know how it goes. It's really great that there are such helpful people like you! Have a nice day and see you next time!
