Renault Avantime 2002 with high fuel consumption and particulate filter problems seeks advice

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

DPF regeneration failure

Poor fuel economy

Hey guys, I hope someone can help me a bit. I am worried about my 2002 Renault Avantime with approx. 98897 km mileage. The car has shown a few problems such as: black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light is on, the engine runs rough and shows less power, the particulate filter no longer regenerates properly and the fuel consumption is high. I suspect this is due to the exhaust back pressure sensor in conjunction with the diesel particulate filter. I already burnt my fingers during my last visit to the workshop and I'm not keen on a new one. Has anyone had similar experiences and can give me some advice? I am grateful for any tips.

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2005 Renault Espace. Same symptoms - black smoke, check engine light was on, and the engine was also running rough. It was actually the DPF and the exhaust back pressure sensor that were causing trouble. To cut a long story short: the DPF was heavily loaded and had to be cleaned. The exhaust back pressure sensor was also faulty and had to be replaced. After the work, the Espace ran like clockwork again. The good news is that there is no irreparable damage. But of course it's a pretty annoying problem and you shouldn't ignore it. Unfortunately I can't give you a price, but I hope this helps you anyway. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your feedback! You had exactly the same problems with your Espace. I had a really long face when I saw my Avantime puffing like that... But I'm reassured that you didn't suffer any permanent damage. Can you tell me what you paid to have all the problems fixed? And have you had any worries about it since then? Many thanks in advance and have a safe journey!

Hey, I'm glad I could help you! I can well understand your long face, I felt the same way with my Espace back then. Regarding your questions: The total repair costs at the time were €1325. Most of that went on cleaning the heavily loaded DPF. That was quite a chunk, but since then my Espace has been running smoothly again. So far, I haven't had any further problems with the exhaust back pressure sensor or the particulate filter. So, keep your fingers crossed that it goes just as smoothly for you. Keep up the good work and don't let it get you down!

Hello, thank you very much for the helpful reply and the encouraging words! It's reassuring to at least have an idea of what I might be facing. 1325 is a lot of money, but if it gets the matter under control and my Avantime runs smoothly again afterwards, then it's worth it. Your positive experiences encourage me that it could work out for me too. Thank you again for your support and I wish you continued worry-free driving!
