Range Rover Transfer Case Whine? Fix It Before It Fails!

Help needed: Range Rover transfer case issue? I've got a 2015 Range Rover diesel (127k km) and I'm getting really concerned. The transmission's acting up with erratic shifting, ABS light is on, and there's this nasty whining/grinding sound. Pretty sure it's the transfer case emergency control, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and repair cost? Looking for recommendations on what to check or fix. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Had almost identical issues with my 2012 Range Rover Sport TDV8. Started with strange shifting and ABS warnings, followed by that distinctive whine from the transfer case. Got it checked at the garage last month, turned out the transfer case actuator motor had failed, which triggered the stability control errors. The mechanic found metal debris in the transfer case fluid, indicating internal wear. They had to replace the entire transfer case assembly and reprogram the control module. It's definitely a serious repair job, not something you can ignore, as it affects both safety systems and drivetrain. The grinding noise typically means internal damage is already happening. My advice: Get it looked at ASAP before it causes more damage to other components. The transfer case is a critical component in these vehicles, and when it fails, it can affect multiple systems including ABS and stability control.

Had the exact same drama! My husband and I went through this with our 2014 Range Rover. Those symptoms sound spot on, the weird shifting, ABS light and that horrible grinding noise drove us nuts. Had it fixed about 3 months back, definitely the transfer case. Much better now, though it was a pretty major repair job. How did yours turn out? Would be really interested to know what you ended up paying for the fix, these repairs can be all over the place price-wise! Has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks popping up?

Hey! Really glad to give you an update on my Range Rover Sport situation. You'll be happy to hear it's running like a dream now! After my last post, I took it to the mechanic and it turned out to be exactly what we suspected. The best part? They found it was actually just a consequential error in the dynamic stability control that was triggering the transfer case emergency mode. Amazingly, theyaged to sort it without any parts replacement, just needed a proper diagnostic and reset. Would you believe it didn't cost me a single cent? The grinding noise completely disappeared, and the transmission's shifting perfectly now. No more ABS warnings either. It's been about three weeks since the fix, and I've had zero issues. Such a relief after all that stress! Really different from what I initially feared when I thought the whole transfer case needed replacing. Sometimes these Range Rovers just like to scare us a bit, don't they? How's yours holding up since your repair job?

Thanks for sharing your experience! Wish my repair had been that simple! Just got back from the mechanic yesterday actually. Unlike your lucky break, my transfer case needed a complete replacement, definitely not cheap! The mechanic showed me all the metal shavings in the old unit, so at least I know it wasn't a waste of money. Labor and parts came to quite a bit, but honestly, worth every penny. The difference is like night and day now. No more grinding noise, shifts perfectly, and that annoying ABS light finally stopped haunting my dashboard. The mechanic also did a full system check while they were at it, caught a couple of minor issues before they could become bigger problems. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed. Could've ended up with way more damage if I'd kept putting it off. Just goes to show these things need sorting straight away, even if it means dealing with mechanics again! Time to enjoy my smooth-running Rover again, fingers crossed for no more surprises for a while!
