Range Rover Tailgate Failure: Hall Sensor Alert

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

|

Tailgate does not open automatically

Hey everyone, 2019 Range Rover diesel owner here. My tailgate stopped working on auto mode and there's a warning light on the dash. I suspect it might be the Hall sensor, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with this issue. Has anyone had this fixed? What did your mechanic find and how was it resolved? Any input would be really helpful.

Hey there! I've got some experience with similar luxury SUVs. I actually had a very similar issue with my 2017 Range Rover Sport diesel. The auto tailgate problem is really annoying, right? Mine turned out to be a faulty cable connection, the wiring got worn out over time. Had to take it to my regular mechanic (I've got decent experience with cars but this needed professional help). They diagnosed it and found the cable was defective. The fix wasn't too complicated, but it cost me around 95 Euro. Before you dive into repairs though, could you tell us: Does it make any unusual sounds when trying to operate? Have you checked if it works manually? When exactly did the problem start? This could help determine if you're dealing with the same issue I had or something else. These models can be a bit tricky with electrical stuff, but usually fixable without breaking the bank.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Just had my service last month at 99208 KM, and this issue started right after. To answer your questions, no weird sounds, just completely unresponsive in auto mode. Manual operation works fine though. The warning light came on suddenly during grocery shopping, and it's been acting up since. I'm relieved to hear it might just be a cable issue rather than the sensor, that sounds way less expensive than what I was worried about! I'll get it checked by my mechanic. Really appreciate the detailed response, especially since we've got similar vehicles. Did you notice any warning signs before your cable completely failed?

Hey again! Yeah, I totally get what you're saying about it starting after service, that's actually pretty interesting because my issue also popped up shortly after routine maintenance. Strange coincidence, right? Looking back, I did notice some warning signs before my cable completely gave up, the tailgate would sometimes hesitate for a second or two before responding, especially in cold weather. But it wasn't super obvious at first, which is probably why I didn't pay much attention to it. Since you mentioned it started right after service, I'd actually suggest talking to the service center first. They might have accidentally disturbed something while working on your car. In my case, I found out later that some of the wiring near the tailgate can get moved around during routine maintenance. The fact that your manual operation works fine is exactly like what happened with mine, that's actually a good sign! It usually means the motor and main mechanism are okay, so you're probably looking at an electrical issue like I had. Quick tip, while you're waiting to get it checked, make sure to keep using the manual operation carefully. I made the mistake of keep trying the auto function and apparently that didn't help! Let me know what your mechanic says, really curious if it turns out to be the same issue as mine!

I'll compose the final response from's perspective: Thanks for the follow-up! That's really helpful info about the warning signs, I've been thinking back and now that you mention it, I did notice some slight delays in the auto-open response over the past few weeks, but didn't think much of it at the time. You've made a really good point about the service center, I'll definitely give them a call first thing tomorrow. It makes total sense that the wiring could've been disturbed during maintenance. I'm actually feeling more optimistic now since our issues sound so similar, especially with the manual operation still working. I appreciate the tip about avoiding the auto function, I've been repeatedly trying it hoping it would suddenly start working again (probably not my smartest move!). I'll stick to manual operation until I can get it properly checked out. I'll let you know what they find when I take it in. Really grateful for all your detailed insights, it's saved me a lot of worry about potentially expensive sensor replacements!
