Yeah, that's exactly what happened with mine too! Thanks for sharing your experience. The symptoms match perfectly, it's almost like you're describing my car! Those PTC heaters can be really tricky and mine was definitely giving me grief just like yours. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the repair? Just trying to get an idea of what I'm in for. Also, has everything been running smoothly since you got it fixed, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?
Hey again! I'm glad I could help before, and I can definitely update you now on how everything turned out. So after seeing my mechanic, they confirmed it was indeed the electric auxiliary heater that was acting up. The repair set me back 350€, which honestly wasn't as bad as I was expecting given how much trouble it was causing. They replaced the whole PTC heater assembly, and I'm happy to report everything's been running like a charm since then! The coolant level has stayed exactly where it should be, no more mysterious disappearing act! Engine temp is stable now, and that annoying warning light hasn't come back. The cabin heating is actually working better than it has in years, which was a nice bonus I wasn't expecting. It's been about 4 months since the fix, and I haven't had a single issue pop up. Honestly, it was worth every cent to get it sorted properly. If you're still on the fence about getting it fixed, I'd say go for it, it's definitely not the kind of problem that gets better on its own, and you really don't want to risk engine damage from low coolant levels.
Thanks so much for all the details! You've really put my mind at ease about this whole situation. I actually went ahead and got it fixed yesterday, figured better safe than sorry, especially after hearing your experience. Got a decent mechanic through a 's recommendation. Turns out it was exactly what you described, the PTC heater was shot and leaking coolant everywhere. The repair took about 5 hours and cost me a bit more than yours, but honestly, seeing how much better the car runs now, it was totally worth it. The mechanic was really thorough and showed me the old part, it was completely corroded! No wonder my coolant was vanishing. Already noticed the cabin heating working better, and that annoying warning light is finally gone. The engine temperature is staying steady too. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It helped me make the decision to get it sorted quickly instead of putting it off. Cars, right? Always something to keep us on our toes!
Hey! I had a similar issue with my 2012 Range Rover Sport TDV8. The PTC heater went bad last winter and showed exactly those symptoms, warning light, engine temp rising, and mysteriously disappearing coolant. Got it checked at my garage and it turned out the auxiliary heater was totally shot. The coolant was actually leaking through the heater unit and evaporating on the hot engine parts. Had to replace the entire PTC heater assembly, including the housing. Pretty serious issue since it affects both engine temperature and cabin heating. Plus, that coolant leak could've caused bigger problems if left unchecked. The repair took about 6 hours at the shop. If you're seeing these symptoms, don't wait too long to get it fixed. The coolant loss alone can lead to engine overheating, which could get much more expensive to repair.
