Range Rover's Electrical Nightmare: Battery & Light Issues

Dim or flickering lights

|

Weak battery when starting the engine

Hey everyone! Need some help with my 2021 Range Rover. Having electrical issues, battery seems weak during starts, and all lights are dimming and flickering. Diagnostic shows undervoltage in the system. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their RR? Would love to know what the actual problem was and how your mechanic fixed it. Thanks!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and went through something very similar with my 2019 Range Rover Sport last winter. The symptoms were exactly what you're describing, sluggish starts and flickering lights. Turned out my battery was completely shot after running numerous tests. I took it to my regular workshop where they confirmed the alternator was fine, but the battery wasn't holding charge anymore. Got it replaced for about 290 Euro, including labor, and all issues disappeared immediately. Could you share what model year Range Rover you have and how many miles are on it? This would help determine if you're facing the same issue. These symptoms are pretty typical for a failing battery in Range Rovers and Land Rovers in general.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Range Rover has 198274 KM and just had its service last month. Your symptoms do sound identical to what I'm experiencing. The battery theory makes sense since the service didn't flag any alternator issues. I'll get the battery tested first before looking into more complex electrical problems. Did you use an OEM battery for the replacement or go with an aftermarket option?

Hey again! Good to hear back from you! Yeah, with that mileage, I totally get why you're facing these issues. When I dealt with my battery problem in my Range Rover Sport, I actually went with an aftermarket AGM battery, specifically picked a Bosch S6 that was recommended by my mechanic. It was a bit cheaper than the OEM option but has been working perfectly for over a year now. Just a heads up from my experience, make sure whoever tests your battery does a proper load test, not just a voltage check. When mine was failing, it would sometimes show okay voltage when just sitting there, but would drop significantly under load during starting. Also, while you're at it, might be worth having them check the battery terminals for any corrosion. Had a bit of that on mine too, and cleaning them up definitely helped with the connection. These Range Rovers can be pretty sensitive to even minor electrical issues. Let me know how it goes! Always happy to share what I learned from my own RR adventures.

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! Really appreciate the tip about the Bosch S6 battery, definitely going to look into that option. And you make a great point about the load test, I'll specifically ask for that when I take it in. I actually hadn't thought about checking the terminals for corrosion, but it makes total sense given how long I've had this battery. Going to book it in tomorrow and request both the load test and terminal inspection before jumping straight to a replacement. Will probably follow your lead with the Bosch if it turns out I need a new one, seems like it's been a reliable choice for you. Thanks again for all your help with this!
