Raider's Climate Control Nightmare: Heat & Defrost Dead?

Mirror doesn't defrost

|

Insufficient Cooling/Heating

Hey everyone, my 2008 Mitsubishi Raider is having issues with the climate control system. The heating and cooling aren't working properly, and the side mirrors won't defrost. I suspect it might be a faulty defogging sensor. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I'd really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the fix was at your workshop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a pretty similar issue with my 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander (I've got some experience working on cars, but I'm no expert). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through. In my case, it turned out to be a defective cable connection in the climate control system. Took it to my regular workshop, and they found that some cables were corroded and needed replacement. Total bill came to about 155 Euro, and it fixed all the issues, heating, AC, and the defrosting started working perfectly again. Could you share what region you're in and if you've noticed any other electrical issues? Also, have you checked if the problem happens more when it's particularly cold or humid? This info could help determine if you're dealing with the same problem I had.

Thanks for the insight! Yeah, I'm facing these issues at 134685 KM, and it's been about 3 months since my last service. Funny you mention the humidity connection, I've definitely noticed it gets worse during damp weather. I'm in the Seattle area, so that's pretty much all the time! Haven't spotted any other electrical problems yet, but I'll keep an eye out. Your repair cost sounds way more reasonable than what I was worried it might be. Might give my local mechanic a look at those cable connections first. Thanks for sharing your experience, gives me a good starting point!

Hey again! Yeah, after seeing your location and mileage details, I'm even more convinced it's similar to what I dealt with in my Outlander. Seattle's weather is pretty much a perfect recipe for these kinds of issues, all that moisture really does a number on those cable connections over time. Just remembered something that might help, before I got mine fixed, I noticed the problem was especially bad in the mornings after the car had been sitting outside overnight. The symptoms would sometimes improve a bit after driving for a while, but never completely went away until I got it fixed. Did you notice anything like that? My Outlander had about 128,000 KM when this happened, so we're in the same ballpark mileage-wise. Since getting those cables replaced, I haven't had any issues for the past two years, even in wet weather. Quick tip: while you're waiting to get it checked out, try to park in a garage if you can, it'll at least help minimize additional moisture damage. Let me know how it goes when you get it looked at!

Thanks so much for the follow-up! You've literally described my situation to a T, the morning issues are exactly what I'm experiencing. It's definitely worse after sitting outside overnight, which makes total sense now that you've explained about the moisture. Unfortunately, I don't have garage access at my apartment, but I'll try to find a covered spot at least. I'm feeling pretty relieved now, sounds like I'm dealing with something fairly straightforward and not too expensive. I've already called my mechanic and scheduled an appointment for next Tuesday. I'll make sure to mention the cable connections and ask them to check for corrosion specifically. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this info, it's super helpful to hear from someone who's already been through it. I'll probably post an update once I get it sorted out. Thanks again!
