Q8 Boost Pressure Drop Signals Turbo System Warning

Looking for advice on my 2022 Q8 showing boost pressure issues. The engine performance has dropped significantly with higher fuel consumption. Check engine light is on and throttle response feels sluggish. Suspecting a boost pressure control fault but want to understand common causes before heading to a workshop. The symptoms appeared gradually over the last week. Particularly interested in potential vacuum leaks or turbo lag related issues. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and can share what the actual fix was? Also curious about the repair time and typical components that needed replacement.

Having dealt with a similar issue on my 2020 Q7 last year, I can share my experience. After noticing comparable symptoms, sluggish acceleration and increased fuel consumption, I initially suspected turbo lag issues. After taking it to my trusted workshop, they diagnosed a defective vacuum switching valve causing pressure drop issues. The pressure sensor readings were inconsistent, indicating a boost control problem. The faulty valve was causing irregular boost pressure distribution, leading to the performance issues you described. The repair was relatively straightforward, costing 140 Euro and taking about 2 hours to complete. The symptoms disappeared completely after the fix, and fuel consumption returned to normal levels. Before jumping to conclusions, could you share: Any specific error codes from the ECU? Does the boost pressure issue occur more during cold starts? Have you noticed any unusual sounds from the engine bay? When was your last scheduled maintenance? A proper diagnosis is crucial since similar symptoms can stem from various causes, from simple vacuum leaks to more complex boost solenoid issues. Getting these details would help narrow down if your case matches what I experienced.

Last service was completed at 184869 KM and they checked the bypass valve which appeared fine at the time. After checking the error codes with my OBD reader, I got P0299 and P2261. The issues are definitely worse during cold starts, and there is a distinct whistling sound from the engine bay when accelerating. I have noticed more compressor surge under heavy acceleration too. The boost pressure seems inconsistent, sometimes normal, other times significantly lower than expected. I suspect the boost pressure sensor might be faulty given the erratic readings, but the vacuum leak symptoms also match what many have described. Ready to take it to a workshop but wanted to gather more insights from the community first to better understand the potential scope of repairs needed.

From my previous experience with our Q7s boost issues, those error codes (P0299 and P2261) strongly indicate a boost system problem, possibly more severe than the vacuum valve issue I dealt with. The whistling sound combined with compressor surge symptoms points towards a failing turbocharger component rather than just a sensor issue. In my case, the symptoms were less severe and didn't include the distinct whistling you describe. When I faced similar but milder engine performance issues, the pressure drop was consistent rather than erratic like yours. The inconsistent boost pressure readings you mention, especially during cold starts, suggest possible issues with: Wastegate actuator malfunction, Damaged turbo seals, Cracked boost pipes This sounds more complex than my previous repair with the vacuum switching valve. Based on the symptoms, I recommend getting it checked professionally soon to prevent potential turbo damage. The compressor surge during acceleration is particularly concerning as it can lead to premature turbo wear. Get them to specifically check: 1. Turbocharger shaft play 2. Boost pressure sensor readings across different RPMs 3. Wastegate operation and control 4. Intake system for leaks The repair cost and time will likely exceed what I experienced (140 Euro/2 hours) if turbo components need replacement.

Thanks for sharing those details about the error codes. The symptoms you mentioned definitely help explain what might be going on. The P0299 underboost code combined with P2261 suggests this could be more complex than a basic bypass valve issue. Based on the workshop feedback from the last service, I am concerned the engine performance issues might stem from a developing turbo problem rather than just sensor readings. The whistling noise and compressor surge are particularly worrying signs that werent present during the last checkup. The boost pressure inconsistency during cold starts matches what others have reported with failing wastegate actuators. My OBD reader shows the pressure dropping as low as 0.2 bar at times which seems way off normal specs. I will get it to a workshop this week to have them do a full diagnosis. Will ask them to specifically check for vacuum leaks and test the boost solenoid operation. At least having these error codes and symptoms documented should help them pinpoint the issue faster. Will update the thread once I know more about the actual cause and repair costs. Really hoping its not the turbo itself needing replacement but the symptoms seem to point that way unfortunately.
