Thanks for the detailed response about the steering issues. I had almost identical problems with my Q7 about 6 months ago. The steering wheel kept getting heavier and the shaking got worse over time. Just wondering, how much did the repair work cost in your case? My steering pump replacement plus new pressure hose came to around 1200 Euro, but the steering rack thankfully didnt need replacing. Has everything stayed working properly since your repair? Mine has been running smoothly, but I started checking the hydraulic fluid level monthly just to be safe.
Thanks for asking about the repair costs. After my initial concern about major steering system repairs, it turned out much simpler and cheaper than expected. The mechanic found the power steering issues were caused by a faulty cable connection rather than a failing steering pump or hydraulic fluid problems. The total repair only came to 95 Euro for fixing the loose electrical connection. Once the plug was properly secured, the power steering function returned to normal immediately. No need for any steering column or pump replacement in my case. The steering system has worked flawlessly since this repair 8 months ago. Regular fluid level checks are still smart preventive maintenance though. The wheel alignment also stays perfect with no more shaking or heavy steering issues. Your case sounds like it needed more extensive work with the steering pump replacement. But at least you caught it before the steering rack was damaged, which would have been much costlier.
After getting that helpful advice, I finally went to get my car checked. Found a new mechanic who specializes in power steering systems and the experience was much better than expected. The pressure hose had developed a slow leak where it connects to the steering pump, causing the hydraulic fluid to gradually drain. This explained the increasingly heavy steering wheel and shaking. The mechanic showed me how the failing pump was struggling to maintain proper pressure in the steering system. Total repair came to 780 Euro including: New pressure hose installation, Power steering pump repair, Fresh hydraulic fluid, System pressure test The steering wheel now feels solid again with no more shaking or heaviness. Regular monthly checks of the hydraulic fluid level should help catch any future issues early. Definitely worth finding a specialized mechanic who could properly diagnose and fix the problem.
Had similar issues with my 2008 Audi A6 3.0 TDI last season. The symptoms match exactly what you describe, heavy steering, wheel shake, and error codes pointing to power steering malfunction. The root cause turned out to be a failing steering pump and damaged pressure hose connections. The steering rack also showed significant wear, likely from running with insufficient hydraulic fluid for some time. This required comprehensive repair work including: Replacing the complete steering pump unit, Installing new pressure hoses, Flushing the entire power steering system, Full wheel alignment after component replacement The steering pump failure was causing irregular pressure, leading to the heavy steering feel. The loose sensation came from worn connection points where the pressure hoses meet the steering rack. This is definitely a serious issue that needs immediate attention. Continuing to drive with these symptoms risks complete steering system failure. The repair required specialized diagnostic equipment to properly identify all failing components and ensure proper pressure throughout the system after repairs. Most importantly, get it checked by a certified shop that regularly works with VAG power steering systems. The steering rack on these models requires specific knowledge and tools.
