Thanks for sharing your A4 experience. Was dealing with almost identical symptoms on my Q5 last winter. The intermittent engine start failures were especially frustrating during morning commutes. After reading your post, I checked with my current mechanic and he confirmed the ignition coils were indeed the culprit in my case too. Just curious, do you remember what the total repair cost was for your ignition coil replacement? Also wondering if youve had any other starting issues since getting it fixed? My repair has held up well so far but always good to know what to watch for with these 2.0L engines.

Since fixing those ignition coils on my A4, the starting issues completely disappeared. The total repair included 52 Euro for a blown fuse they discovered during diagnostics, plus the coil replacement work. The key turn is now smooth every time and the engine runs perfectly without any rough running or shutdowns. Its been about 18 months since the repair and no ignition switch or starting issues have returned. The 2.0L engine starts reliably in all conditions now. Based on what my mechanic explained, replacing all ignition coils at once was the right call since they tend to fail around the same time. The blown fuse was just an extra issue they caught during the diagnostic process.

Finally got my Q5 fixed last week and wanted to share the outcome. After getting fed up with the starting problems, I took it to a new mechanic who specializes in German cars. The ignition system diagnostic confirmed failed ignition coils, just like you mentioned. They replaced all four coils and found a damaged spark plug wire during inspection. Total bill came to 420 Euro including parts and labor. More than I expected, but the car starts perfectly now, no more rough running or unusual shutoffs. The new mechanic explained that changing all ignition coils together was smart preventive maintenance, considering they typically wear at similar rates. Been a week of daily driving and the engine fires up instantly every time I turn the ignition key. Really glad I got this sorted before winter. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it helped me better understand what I was dealing with and gave me confidence to get it properly checked.

Had a similar starting issue with my 2013 Audi A4 2.0T. The symptoms matched exactly, intermittent engine start problems and rough running when it did start. Initially thought it was the ignition switch, but diagnostic testing revealed failed ignition coils. The car electronics showed no error codes at first, which made diagnosis tricky. The starting issue became more frequent over time, especially during cold starts. After complete inspection, we found two failing ignition coils and a corroded connector causing inconsistent spark delivery. The repair involved replacing all four ignition coils as preventive maintenance since they typically wear at similar rates. This is actually a common issue on these 2.0L engines and not particularly complex to fix. The starter motor and battery tested fine, which helped narrow down the problem. Key symptoms that matched: Intermittent starting problems, Engine running rough, Unusual shutoffs, Normal dashboard function While not the most serious repair for these engines, ignoring failed ignition coils can lead to catalytic converter damage. Would suggest having it properly diagnosed rather than continuing to drive with these symptoms.
