Q3 TDI Power Loss & Black Smoke: DPF Troubleshooting

My Q3 2.0 TDI from 2012 (142k km) is struggling with power loss and keeps blowing dark smoke during acceleration. Pretty sure its a DPF issue since I had a bad experience with a backpressure sensor fault at my last garage visit. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Looking for recommendations on whether DPF cleaning or filter replacement would be the better option and what to watch out for at the mechanic.

Had a similar issue with my A4 2.0 TDI from 2015. The engine light came on during motorway driving, followed by significant power loss and black smoke under load. A vehicle inspection revealed both a sensor fault and a severely clogged DPF. DPF cleaning worked temporarily but the issue returned after 2000km. The exhaust system backpressure remained problematic, indicating the filter was beyond restoration. Full DPF replacement became necessary as the internal structure was damaged from multiple incomplete regeneration cycles. The repair was quite serious, requiring the exhaust system to be partially dismantled. Watch for mechanics who suggest quick fixes like forced regeneration only, this often masks deeper issues. A proper diagnosis should include checking the backpressure sensor, fuel injectors, and EGR valve as these components often contribute to DPF problems. If your mileage is high and the DPF shows severe clogging, replacement might be more cost-effective long-term than repeated cleaning attempts. Make sure to address any underlying issues with injection or sensor faults to prevent rapid re-clogging of a new or cleaned filter.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Actually went through something nearly identical with my Q3 last year. The repair shop found similar issues and I also ended up needing a complete filter replacement after trying the cleaning route first. Did you remember roughly how much the full DPF replacement cost in your case? Also curious if you had any related problems pop up since the repair? The backpressure readings on mine are still showing normal after 10 months, but I keep monitoring just in case.

Had the repair done recently and paid 1550 Euro for the complete diesel filter replacement service. The price included labor and parts, which solved the fuel efficiency issues completely. Since fixing the defective diesel particulate filter, the vehicle runs perfectly, no more power loss or smoke problems during acceleration. The regular vehicle inspection shows normal backpressure readings, and regeneration cycles are completing as they should. Worth mentioning that fuel consumption improved noticeably after the repair. Would recommend keeping an eye on the exhaust sensors during routine maintenance, as early detection of any issues helps prevent complete filter failure. For long-term reliability, make sure to include enough highway driving to allow proper filter regeneration. The investment in a proper repair rather than temporary fixes definitely paid off in terms of performance and peace of mind.

Finally got the repair sorted at my local shop last week. Guess cleaning wasnt an option since the filter was completely clogged. Ended up paying 1800 Euro for a new DPF plus installation. More than I wanted to spend but the sensor fault also needed fixing. The difference in performance is incredible though. No more black smoke and the engine feels much more responsive during acceleration. Fuel efficiency has improved too, getting about 15% better mileage on my regular routes. Going to be more careful with my driving style from now on. The mechanic explained I need more highway runs to help with filter regeneration. At least the vehicle inspection showed everything is working properly now. Glad I went for the full replacement instead of temporary fixes.
