Q2 EGR Issues: Smoke, Jerking & Power Loss Symptoms

My Q2 is acting up with power loss and jerking during acceleration, plus I see smoke and hear hissing sounds. The check engine light is on, and fuel consumption has increased a lot. The rough idle is especially noticeable at stops. From what I understand, this could be related to a faulty EGR valve, but my last mechanic visit was not great, so I am hesitant to go back. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and trusted repair solutions. Car details: 2023 Audi Q2 1.5L Gasoline 179182 KM

Had the same issues on my 2020 Audi A3 with the 1.4L engine. The symptoms perfectly match a faulty EGR valve, power loss, rough idle and increased fuel consumption are typical signs of EGR system problems. The exhaust gas recirculation system started acting up at around 150000 KM. Initially thought it was minor, but the automotive repair revealed a completely stuck EGR valve. The carbon buildup was preventing proper valve movement, causing inconsistent air-fuel mixture and emissions issues. The repair involved removing and cleaning the EGR valve, plus cleaning the intake manifold to remove carbon deposits. This is not a quick fix job, requires careful disassembly and proper cleaning to avoid damage to surrounding components. After repair, the engine ran smoother, especially at idle, and passed the emissions test without issues. This is considered a serious maintenance item since a malfunctioning EGR can lead to increased engine wear and potential catalytic converter damage if left untreated. For diesel engines these issues are even more critical, but gasoline engines also need proper EGR maintenance. Best to have it checked soon, the symptoms will only get worse and could lead to more expensive repairs if ignored.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the EGR valve issue. That vacuum leak and rough idle sounds exactly like what I dealt with on my Q2. I ended up getting it fixed and the difference in performance was immediate. Would you mind sharing how much the repair cost in your case? Also curious if youve had any related issues pop up since the fix? The reason I ask is my catalytic converter started making noise a few months after, wondering if that could be connected to the original EGR problem.

Thanks for asking about the repair costs. Just had my EGR valve fixed last month when it was completely jammed, paid 355 Euro for the full service. The vehicle emissions and performance improved dramatically right after the repair. A malfunctioning EGR valve can definitely impact your catalytic converter. When the EGR system fails, it alters the exhaust flow and temperature, which puts extra stress on the catalytic converter. The connection between these components is quite direct since they both handle exhaust gases. Since the repair, my engine has been running perfectly with no vacuum leaks or rough idle issues. The fuel economy is back to normal, and the engine maintains steady power during acceleration. No check engine lights or related problems have appeared. If your catalytic converter is making noise, get it checked soon. A damaged EGR valve can send excess carbon deposits through the exhaust system, potentially causing long-term catalytic converter damage. Better to address it early before it leads to more expensive repairs.

I finally got my Q2 fixed after dealing with those frustrating symptoms. Found a new mechanic who actually took time to diagnose the problem properly. The whole EGR valve and intake manifold cleaning service cost me 420 Euro. The repair process took about 4 hours. They found significant carbon buildup blocking the exhaust gas recirculation system. Once cleaned, the difference was like night and day, no more vacuum leak, perfect idle, and power delivery is smooth again. The mechanic also checked the catalytic converter while fixing the EGR issue. Thankfully caught it early before any serious damage occurred. Vehicle emissions are now back to normal levels and fuel consumption dropped back to what it should be. Really glad I didn't wait longer to get it fixed. The engine runs so much better now, and no more check engine lights or strange noises. Definitely worth finding a reliable mechanic who understands these systems properly.
