Jerking on acceleration

Hey all, my 2013 Mitsubishi Proudia is giving me serious trouble. Engine's running rough with black smoke on acceleration, constant misfiring, and power loss. It's also stalling at idle and shaking pretty bad. Check engine light is on and fuel consumption has gone through the roof. I suspect it might be the ignition coil, but want to be sure before taking it to the shop. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience with cars and had a very similar issue with my 2015 Mitsubishi Galant last year. The symptoms were exactly like yours, rough running, misfiring, and that annoying shake at idle. Turned out it was indeed a bad connection to the ignition coil. Took it to my trusted mechanic who diagnosed it right away. The repair cost me around 365 Euro, but it fixed all those issues completely. The engine's been running smooth as silk since then. Before I share more specifics about what my mechanic did, Which engine variant you have? How many miles/km on the clock? Any recent work done on the car? This will help me give you more relevant advice based on my experience.

Thanks for your reply! My Proudia has 76074 KM on it and just had its service last month. Mine is the gasoline engine model. The symptoms you described with your Galant sound spot-on to what I'm experiencing. That's somewhat reassuring that it might just be the ignition coil. Was it a pretty straightforward fix for your mechanic once they identified the issue? I'd much rather deal with a coil problem than something more serious with the engine.

Hey again! Yep, I had almost the exact same mileage on my Galant (around 78,000 km) when this happened. Based on what you're saying about your Proudia, it sounds even more like what I experienced with my ignition coil issue. The fix was super straightforward for my mechanic, took about an hour and a half total. In my case, they found that one of the coil packs was completely shot and another one was on its way out. Since they were all original parts and had similar wear, my mechanic suggested replacing all of them to prevent future issues. I agreed, and honestly, it was worth every penny. The transformation was immediate, no more black smoke, rough running disappeared completely, and my fuel economy went back to normal. Plus, that annoying shake at idle? Gone completely! One thing I learned from this, when you start getting multiple symptoms like we both had (the smoke, shaking, and power loss), it's usually pointing to ignition coils. They tend to fail gradually, which is why you get that mix of problems. Quick tip from my experience, make sure they check the spark plugs while they're at it. My mechanic found that the bad coils had affected one of my plugs, so we replaced those too while everything was apart. Better safe than sorry, right?

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's really helpful to know about your experience, especially since our cars had such similar mileage when the problem occurred. I feel much more confident now about taking it to the shop, at least I won't be going in completely blind about what the issue might be. I'll definitely take your advice about checking the spark plugs too. Makes total sense to do everything while they're already working on it. The cost seems pretty reasonable for what needs to be done, especially if it'll fix all these annoying issues. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I'll get it booked in first thing tomorrow morning before it gets any worse. Thanks again!
