Problems with windshield wiper switch and headlight cleaning system in a 2001 BMW 3 Series Diesel

Wipers don't work properly

Headlight cleaning system without function

Hello everyone! I have a strange problem with my 2001 BMW 3 Series Diesel. The headlight cleaning system does nothing and the windshield wipers are acting up. Could be a broken windshield wiper switch. Has anyone had similar experiences and can give me a few tips? I would also be interested to know how this was fixed in your workshop. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2003 BMW 5 series gasoline engine. I am not a car specialist, but I do have some experience with cars. In my car, the cable connection of the steering column switch was defective. They reconnected the cables in the workshop. It cost me 155 euros. Could you please give me more details about your car and the problem? Maybe then I can help you better. Best regards!

Hi, thanks for your help! My car has run about 237680 km, the last service was about 3 months ago. The problem with the headlights and wipers is kind of sporadic. Sometimes everything works normally and sometimes it's like a switch in the car isn't responding properly or something. Your story with the steering column switch sounds plausible. I'll check that out. Thanks again!

Hi, no problem, always happy to help! It really does sound like a sporadic electrical problem. The headlight cleaning system and windshield wipers are connected via the control unit, they probably share a path. In my BMW it was fixed quickly when the broken cable was replaced. It could also be that only the control unit needs to be reprogrammed, any BMW dealer can do that. If I were you, I would have the cable connections checked first. If that doesn't help, then have the control unit checked. Hope this helps and keep your fingers crossed that it's nothing too expensive. Good luck! Best regards

Hi, thanks for the detailed advice! I will definitely have this checked. Maybe it really is just the cable connection or a reprogramming of the control unit, that would of course be the best case scenario. I'll take it to the garage in a few days and see what they say. I might not have thought of it without you. Have a nice day, see you then! Best regards.
