Problems with VW Phaeton Diesel 2004: Black smoke, engine light, loss of power and high fuel consumption

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

Poor fuel economy

Engine shuts off by itself

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Hello everyone, I have problems with my VW Phaeton Diesel, year of manufacture 2004. Recently there is black smoke when accelerating, the engine light is on, the engine switches itself off, loss of power, uneven engine running, jerking when accelerating, high fuel consumption, strong exhaust smell and stalling when idling. I suspect that the fuel volume regulator may be defective. Have any of you ever had a similar problem and can give me some troubleshooting tips? I am particularly interested in how you solved the problem in the workshop and what your experiences were. Many thanks in advance.

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2002 VW Touareg Diesel. I'm not a car expert, but have a bit of experience with it. I experienced the same as you: black smoke, high fuel consumption, strong exhaust smell etc. I then went to my garage and they found the fault - a defective fuel flow control valve. The repair cost me 415 euros. See if it gives you similar symptoms to my car when driving. Could you perhaps provide more details about your car? I'd be happy to help you.

Hey, thanks for your reply. Cool to know you've had the same problem before. I'm now at 283200 km and always do regular servicing, so the last service wasn't that long ago. I'll check out the fuel flow control valve and use your costs as a guide, maybe I'll get lucky. Any other tips would be appreciated. Cheers!

Hey, no problem, I'm happy to help. The mileage on your car is actually right around where I had the same problem. I experienced it at about 284000 km. Even if you do regular maintenance, some parts can simply show signs of wear after driving that long. The fuel quantity regulator is one such candidate. I would recommend that you take your car to a garage and have the valve checked. And just by the way, as the problem is quite obvious, I wouldn't drive around with it any longer. This could only exacerbate the situation and ultimately lead to higher repair costs. In case you're asking, I didn't buy a spare part online and fit it myself, the garage did it for me. A word of advice from me would also be to be careful with cheap parts, sometimes it's worth spending a bit more and getting a longer life in return. Keep us posted, can't wait to see what you come up with. Cheers back!

Hey, thanks for the additional info and your advice. You're probably right, I shouldn't risk driving any further and take my car to the garage as soon as possible. The point you made about cheap parts is good too, I'll make sure the garage uses good quality parts even if they cost a bit more. I'll send updates as soon as I know more. Thanks again for the help! Cheers!
