Problems with VW Golf Diesel 2015: loss of power, high consumption and possible defect in the exhaust back pressure sensor

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Unsteady engine

Hi everyone, I have a 2015 VW Golf Diesel with approximately 63000 km on the clock and have recently noticed some signs of potential problems. The check engine light is on, there is loss in engine power, the engine is rough, problems with DPF regeneration as well as high fuel consumption. I assume it might have something to do with the exhaust back pressure sensor. Have any of you had similar problems and can share your experiences? I was last asked to pay quite surprisingly at my mechanic, so I'm trying to inform myself beforehand. Thanks for your experience and advice!

Hi everyone, Thank you very much for your feedback and experience, I really appreciate it! It's reassuring to know that others have had the same problem with the exhaust back pressure sensor and have had it fixed. Your cost information helps me to have a realistic idea of what I might be looking at. I went to the mechanic yesterday and lo and behold, it was actually the exhaust back pressure sensor that was broken. They replaced the sensor and the whole thing cost me €340. I'm pretty happy with it, especially after hearing that it could have been a lot worse. Since I've had the car back it's been running smoothly again, no signs of any problems, the check engine light is off and the fuel consumption has gone down too. It's a really good feeling that everything went well and I really had no reason to worry. Thanks again for all the advice and support! Best regards!

Hi, Just like you I drive a VW, but the 2012 model Passat. At my last inspection at the garage there were similar symptoms, check engine light and loss of power only that my engine wasn't rough. The mechanic eventually replaced the exhaust back pressure sensor and the problem was solved. So your assumption could be correct. It's annoying when the car has problems, but it's nothing serious and should be quite easy to fix. I would suggest not putting off a visit to the garage. Good luck and don't worry, it will be fine!

Hi, thanks for the tip, that's really reassuring. It's good to know that you went through something similar with your Passat and that in the end it was just the exhaust back pressure sensor. Do you have any idea how much it cost you to replace it? Not that my mechanic is ripping me off... And have you had anything similar since then or was the problem completely solved? Thank you!

Hi, I drive a 2017 Audi A3, and I also had a fuss with the exhaust back pressure sensor once. The whole thing was pretty stressful, but it hasn't come back since the visit to the mechanic. But it also cost me a lot, as I had to fork out over €1300 to repair the DPF, which was severely overloaded. So, to come back to your question, replacing the sensor shouldn't drive you to ruin, it's just annoying, but usually necessary. Get back to me when you hear from the mechanic. Don't worry, it will be fine. Best regards!

Hi everyone, I also drive a diesel, but a 2014 BMW X3. I had the error with the exhaust back pressure sensor at around 68000 km. The symptoms were very similar, high consumption and that damn check engine light. In my case, it was actually the exhaust back pressure sensor that had given up the ghost. The replacement cost me just over €300 including installation. Not exactly a bargain, but after that my car ran like clockwork again. I haven't had another problem with the sensor since then. So don't worry too much, even if it is annoying, the costs are usually manageable and the problem is usually solved afterwards. Let's hear what happens next. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, everything will be fine! Best regards!
